Redesign and Updates

Silly, silly, silly. I was almost screaming at my computer out of frustration. :shakefist: I deactivated and reactivated all my plugins, but the smilies1 still wouldn’t work. I tweaked WP-Grins and some core files but still to no avail. It seemed fine in my localhost installation of WordPress. I even successfully installed the plugin in Jae’s website, so why couldn’t I do it here in my own live website?!

Because I didn’t check the “convert emoticons” option in my Options, err, option. That’s why.

See, WordPress isn’t always the problem - sometimes it’s the people who are using it but don’t have any idea what they’re doing.

Most of you people have been in this site before, so yeah, new theme. :yay: It started out differently from what it is now. I thought it would be a breath of fresh air from the usually sidebar-less and bottom-bar themes I’ve been making lately. I went totally crazy with it, using more than 3 colors. I played around with the CSS a lot, and the effects can be seen in almost all major browsers. If you find the font size too small, you can always resize it using your browser of choice (View » Text Size).

This was supposed to be my version of Alan Pearce’s A List Apart article, Multi-Column Layouts Climb Out of the Box. It was an interesting and cool take on a Holy Grail layout, with proper source order and all2. However, Holy Grails have two fixed sidebars and a fluid center, and when viewing the layout in a small screen resolution like 800×600, the content area is too narrow for comfort. Just try viewing this sample layout for example3. It looks beyond bad in 800×600. And my brother’s computer uses screen resolution 800×600. Not good, not good. I thought of having fixed width for my content and sidebars, but I’ve already outgrown the use of it because of paranoia. So I reverted back to using relative units. :blank:

One major thing I like about my new update is the ability of users to edit their own comments after they submitted it. I’ve had it before - a long long time ago - but since I always do my themes from scratch4, I always forget to add the codes. Blah. So…*looks at KT, Aja, and Ate Ems*…this update is especially dedicated to the three of you! Cheers! :lol:

What else? Oh, I now have that MyBlogLog widget everyone seems to have! I might remove it anytime soon though; it makes my page loads slower than usual. I hate it when my own website is slow. And kunwari it’s in support of ShoeMoney for being banned from MyBlogLog for broadcasting its flaws. :cheek:

Feel free to find out some minor updates here and there. Please report coding, spelling, and other errors you may find by clicking on that cute Report Error link in the first sidebar. I’ve had it for months, but I guess no one’s noticing. Special credit goes to Jem and Tutorialtastic for the original script. The input Page URL gets automatically filled with the referring page so you don’t have to type or copy-paste the URL of the page with the error. :)

    Haha..ako pa man din yung prone sa errors kapag WALANG preview feature. I guess I type too fast then I read what I’m typing too fast too.

    I’m not so sure I like this 3 column layout, I’m too easily distracted. I can only keep my eyes on the text if it’s in one column :-P But I really like the header image, so simple yet so classy. Yes, I can edit my own comments! How many minutes is this set for? I am so gonna abuse this now :biggrin:

    Kat: 30 minutes. :) I figured I won’t have to change the default because I was too busy concentrating on the smilies plugin to give it much thought. :)) Maybe I’ll change it to 15 minutes next time.

    Anyway, I have the same doubts too. I’m not used to having a 3-column layout, and everything looks very messy, even for me (still, not as crowded as some other’s blogs, aye? :) ). I thought of making the content font size bigger to draw more attention to it. Watcha think? ^_^ I wish I were good in graphics and colors, you know. Harhar.

    Yes, I absolutely agree! I get agitated when I read blog posts where they only talk about their problems with WP, as if their visitors could do a thing! Hindi ba nila alam na may documentation site and support forums ang WP?!?! What’s more, pinagpipilit nila ang WP sa sarili nila kahit na di nila maintindihan kahit simpleng PHP!

    And oh, I’ve seen that plugin a few weeks ago, pero di ko pa natratray!

    @KT: Hala, may issue ka na rin pala. But I suppose, tinamad lang magbasa yung owner ng blog na iyon.

    Mine’s on 30 too, no one has abused it so far to change what they said or anything. But I might just cut it down to just 15 so they only have time to see and correct mistakes.

    Definitely not as messy as some of the others! I think making the font bigger is a good idea, just a little bit, not too much. At least bigger than the sidebar fonts, or maybe make those smaller. Just experiment til you get a combination you like :cute:

    EDIT: I just noticed how really insane you’ve gone with :hover LOL! Fun though! :dance:

    I’m not all that keen on the layout, I am afraid I am one of those annoying people who put ‘looking pretty’ above all else, while these wonderfully fluid and basic and valid websites all look sleek and yummy…I always think they look kinda bare and…lacking in any sort of personality* :(

    I had never heard of mybloglog before, looks interesting though…going to check it out properly now :)

    Hmm, what you mentioned about the “report error” page having the referral already in there, so you don’t have to fill that out… Does it really work? What if someone doesn’t have a referral to there? There are some ways to make it seem like you don’t have a referral on some web browsers… So I was just curious…

    Anyways, as for editing your own comment… HOW THE HECK DO YOU DO THAT?! Hehe, I’d like to know!!

    Three column layouts are pretty cool, kind of hard to get use to as I use to see them more on Graphic sites rather than for personal sites. It does look livelier than the previous version of your site. My screen is wide at 1280 so no problems on viewing your site…not cramped at all. I am sure that if I looked at this with my smaller desktop 800×600, I would see the problem.

Sinubukan kong iexplain ang side ko sa new entry niya, nakamoderate ata… then nagleave nalang ako ng short explanation sa tagboard, pagbalik ko..wala na ang tagboard. And yung mga “sumang-ayon” naman sa kanya, nakikiride on lang sa tingin ko… kahit walang idea sa kung ano talaga ang nangyari. :(

    Tapos porket nakita akong magcomment dito kay Shari pinagdidiskitahan pa rin ako ng isang “kaalyado” niya… 4th year HS palang si Shari, faithful commenter na ako sa blog entries niya. I’ve used WP for 3 years before I settled at LJ. Baka gusto niya, tulungan ko pa siya sa troubles niya sa WP. LOL.

    ooh, I read that too and I was doing a multicolumn layout for the new themed I mentioned (what are the chances? lol).. but I didn’t like my design in the end so I’m not gonna use it..
