Another Geeky Talk
The 48 hours of CSS Naked Day came and went — and not without a hitch. Aja Lapus‘ plugin clashed with some of the ones I’m using, and I had to find quick workarounds on some problems for it to work. Heck, it didn’t even work at first. And when I fixed it, Misteryosa was naked…and so was the title bar.
Good thing I was able to fix it again. But, if none of you ever noticed, some of the pages just loaded half of the content. One person said that my contact form wouldn’t work, but someone else was able to use it when she asked for help on a Cutenews error she was having. It was, frankly, a horrible naked phase.
Still, I had a blast getting naked.
It might be pointless for some people, but it’s still a nice and creative way of promoting web standards.
*achoo* And also a nice way of catching a cold. Not kidding. I’m grandstanding Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer with my more impressive big red nose.
Should I blame myself for having a sudden burst of inspiration for voyeurism?
Seeing naked websites is nothing new. Aside from occasionally using a text-only web browser, I sometimes visit websites with everything disabled — CSS, images, javascript, and other whatnots. In line with this, it becomes a majorly major problem on my part when I visit websites that make use of CAPTCHAs — those image-based comment verification thingamajigs. I’m pretty sure you’ve seen at least one website that uses it (signing up for some web services like emails sometimes requires visual verification). Some, if not most, blogs powered by Blogger, Blogdrive, and Tabulas make use of it. Funny thing is, some of it can be easily defeated. So much for warding off spam bots, harhar.
So what if a visually impaired 25-year-old woman finds a blog entry interesting and wants to impart something intelligent, but because of this certain annoying challenge-response test, she’s having a hell of a hard time leaving a response? This, ladies and gentlemen, borders on what we shall simply call discrimination, because it is discriminating against the minority: the PWD internet users. I suspect The Philippine Web Accessibility Group members have much to say regarding this issue. Even Jem has a short but sweet piece on the matter.
People with disabilities also surf the internet. They keep online journals and leave comments on other blogs as well. But heck, they are humans who fail something that “determines whether or not the user is human”! How ironic, isn’t it? They’re not spammers to fall victims of some spam-preventing measures. Even I find it hard to make out the distorted letters and numbers of some CAPTCHAs. If spams really worry you, there should be something you can do that’s going to be easier on both you as an administrator and your visitors as the users. Honestly, I get tired of having to submit my comment at least three times for it to get through to some sites because of those darned things. Sometimes I just don’t even bother submitting again after my first try. Mahal ko lang kayo eh…. /sarcasm/ Spam filters, anyone?
Case in point: CAPTCHAs are inaccessible. If you don’t believe me, just try leaving a comment on some sites with images turned off.

Frequently Asked Questions:
- Why do you even disable images?
Because I’m on dial-up, and I have very little patience for slow-loading sites because of images the size of wallpapers. Except when the entries are full of photographs, then that’s understandable. - Images the size of wallpapers?
Gawd, I’ve been wanting to write something that might offend some of my co-bloggers (because some of them just don’t know how to accept criticisms and instead take them as personal attacks, then they go running to their sissies to whine that they’re being bashed, then they talk on their girly forum about it, then they hate on the critic. Believe me, that happens. To think that they’re just around my age….), but it’s more of a tutorial for them than me being a complete ass about it. I just want to ask: What is with the frigging 1000×700, 1000×1498, 1198×304 pixels header images of yours when they can easily be reduced to not more than 650×400?!
- Why are you so into web standards and web accessibility?
Because it’s no secret that I seriously suck in image manipulation and colors. Absolutely no patience. And repeat, I’m on dial-up. I advocate standards and accessibility to increase awareness that there exist such things. It’s up to the readers if they want to implement them. - Don’t you think that standards and accessibility limit creativity on the web?
Nope. And that’s because they don’t. Hop around. Aja’s blog is a perfect example of a great design that strongly adheres to web standards. Arielle B. Cruz, an independent multimedia artist, crafts awesomely accessible websites. CSSPinoy has a collection of Filipino-made websites that conform with web standards. Just look at CSS Zen Garden. See? The design aspect need not be sacrificed just because of the implementation of standards and accessibility. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to fully concentrate on just those two things. Of course you should focus on your design too. It’s just that standards and accessibility are an integral part of web design.
- Anything else?
Just read the linked articles. Your questions might have been answered already. If not, then ask.

In relation to FAQ#4, Lorelle VanFossen asks, in an excellent article for The Blog Herald, “Do You Judge a Web Design By It’s Cover?” It’s inspired (hehe) by an article about judging web designs superficially written 3 years ago which “still holds true today”. I agree with Lorelle, almost nothing has changed. People still tend to look at just the cover. I especially like the following paragraphs.
By judging websites on their surface levels, web designers tend to present the perspective that the surface is the only part that matters. Sorry, folks. It’s the power of the code underneath the surface that makes a web design powerful. And beautiful. Not the pretty face.
A pretty site may look pretty but be a bear to navigate. Where is the search form to help them find more information on your blog? What about a site map? Most recent posts? What about related posts to find more content if this doesn’t quite answer my question?
How friendly is the blog to the visually impaired or disabled? How friendly is it for translation services? What about search engines? Can they flow through the site like water, finding the information they need to return good search results on your behalf?
Next time you start judging a website by its looks only, look deeper. Look at the navigational structure, the ease of access, accessibility features and usability features. The easier a web page is for a visitor to use and move around the site with, the more powerful the design.
Personally, I couldn’t care less if the visual design is good or if the web page validates (but that’s a huge huge plus for me). I praise then forget about those things almost instantly because they’re just not that significant to hold my attention. What keeps me coming back is the content: interesting discussions and well thought out entries. I personally think that content is king, but that’s just me. I shouldn’t forget about individual preferences, right?
Wow, I didn’t know that you browse the internet with images off…
But yes, you should judge by content rather than the layout/design! That’s EXACTLY my thought on this. I hate it when people judge PURELY on layout… But anyways… LOL.
I’m actually getting addicted to this. I used to really love coding. Lalo na nung hs and college nung nagVB kami and other languages. Kinakarir ko talaga to dati.
Para bang sabi ni melanie marquez, do not judge my brother because he is not a book… ha ha ha
happy easter.
Well as a webdesigner here. I usually check if the site loads fast. Then if the site looks good and the right use of colour. I mean how can one appreciate a good content if the colours of one’s site blinds you?
Overall, I dont judge a site base on it’s look but it must be readable so I can appreciate it
in short.. functionality over visual presentation.
Graphics is nothing but crap if the page doesn’t function as it should be.
Hey. Sorry ’bout the plugin. I haven’t double-checked it the first time I released it. It worked on my theme, but I guess not with everyone else’s. PCRE/RegEx has eaten me alive! I’ve managed to fix it during the day and I’ve improved it further after. So, maybe it’s for the 3rd CSS Naked Day.
I hate CAPTCHAs, too, and besides it having been hard to spell, ’tis very obtrusive. Some aren’t even decodable by regular people, what more for those PWDs. I’m glad more people are trying to learn standards now. During 2003, ’twas very hard to explain to some people why I use Netscape and text editors instead of IE and FrontPage. Ugh.
Hey Shari how did you make your sitemap as well as discovery feeds for your comments?
Happy Easter! God bless!

Oh my gulay! Too much geekiness for a dork like me. I might as well start on reading those articles.
Chau: It keeps me sane.
I simply can’t stand too large images they call beautiful layouts. Really. And let me continue that: But anyways…Some people are just so superficial. Geez. Have to admire the galls of those people. I’m not exactly a fan of semi-nude celebrity vectors or whatever they call that. Whatever floats their flaming boats.
Ann: I want to take a vocational course nga eh. Kaso, hassle. Mahal. Hehe. I used to love coding too. Until I got tired of “designing” because I just want a blog that works for me.
Myepinoy: Homaygulay naman. That’s different, lol!
Chase: Yep, forgot about that. Readability. But then again, that’s an accessibility issue already, so…
But hey, that’s why I have my feed reader ready for those sites I like with unreadable text.
Chino: Right. Tell that to them.
Aja: Geesh, no worries there. Shempre labs kita so I still used your plugin, haha! I’m sure it’s not gonna be the last improvement you’d make on the plugin. I will remain loyal to you and use yours still.
Onga, it’s one of my most major problems. I sometimes can’t even decode it. More people are trying to learn standards, but still not enough to have an impact. That reminds me…*basecamp* Gawd, haha! Talk with you on YM na lang!
Jhed: You should, bwahaha. Mahawa ka sana
CAPTCHAs, yes they can be EXTREMELY frustrating for the visitor (actually, after 2 tries, I usually GIVE up trying to submit the damn comment)… and yes, there are actually spambot algorithms that CAN read images. I do use Peter’s Anti-spam Plugin (type word image), but it’s not extremely horrible - it can be used with cookies off and it’s fairly readable. I do feel guilty subjecting my visitors to that, but I thought long and hard about it.
I also use Bad Behaviour and Akismet, but found that some stuff was getting through, so that’s when I also installed Peter’s Anti-spam… At one point (about 5 months ago), I seriously was about to quit blogging altogether because of the flood of spam. It just made it stop being fun. But after that 3 plugin combo whammy install, I only see about 2 spams per week getting through (BB has been a lifesaver for me).
Honestly, if the price of having my blog spam-free is pissing off some people and losing comments, so be it… I’ll accept it… not happy about it, but I’ll accept it. Anyway, I’m not a “ultra serious” blogger and I can live with losing comments. (Most of my entries are private crap anyway.)
Yes, I also often surf sites with images, JavaScript, etc. off… but that’s probably because I’m a software tester by trade and I got used to that behaviour.
Your site looked pretty good… naked.
I saw you get naked hahaha
Fruityoaty: Actually, that’s why I like the captcha you’re using. I don’t have to pull my hair off whenever I submit my comment (except when I forget to type the anti-spam word, of course, lololol). But some plugins really frustrate me to no end. And I wasn’t thinking about your blog at all here because I know your readers are mostly people you know offline, so no real sweat.
Just had to do a semi-rant post because I encountered at least 5 blogs that really did me in with their captchas. Dammit. I seriously wanted to kill someone — starting with the owner of those sites haha!
If you think my site looks good naked…you should see me naked.
Tiffany: You peeked! Haha!
Shari-mistress,
I’m fairly sure you already have lots of people of whatever sexual orientation wanting to know what you do look like…naked… with your recent blogging ROCKSTAR status.
Hey, BTW, BEFORE the PBAs… according to this site tool checker on kineda.com said you were an B-List Blogger… and now Ms. Rockstar is… according to my recent… An A-List Blogger… (and there’s this pink badge thing on the site)…
Quote:
The Very High Authority Group [A-List Bloggers]
(500 or more blogs linking in the last 6 months)
In the final group we see what might be considered the blogging elite. This group, which represents more than 4,000 blogs, exhibits a radical shift in post frequency as well as blog age. Bloggers of this type have been at it longer – a year and a half on average – and post nearly twice a day, an increase in posting volume of over 100% from the previous group. Many of the blogs in this category, in fact, are about as old as Technorati and we’ve grown up together. Some of these are full-fledge professional enterprises that post many, many times per day and behave increasingly like our friends in the mainstream media. As has been widely reported, the impact of these bloggers on our cultures and democracies is increasingly dramatic.
So, what’s it feel like, be an A-List blogger? Do you get more spam? Do you get money? Coupons? Death threats? Love letters (from both sane / insane people)… and finally, will you run for a political office? (HAHAHA).
L8tr days. Hugs and kisses. I’m on semi-sanity blogging hiatus (sort of). I pre-wrote junk before my hiatus and it’s only a matter of pressing the Publish button. Buh-bye.
whoa browsing with images turned off. i wonder ano kaya nakikita mo sa blogs ko. ahahahahah
neways i have also implemented the Matriphe Smap KeyCode System. spam comments are just so uncontrollable. minsan tag 300-500 in one day.
You browse with images off? Eeek, then you see my blog naked everytime!
Oh well, at least it doesn’t keep you from coming back.
I tend to lean on usability instead of aesthetics. Even though I’m on a crappy broadband service, I still become impatient when it takes more than 10-15 seconds for a typical page to load.
I’m no designer, but I’d like to comply and promote standards and web accessibility especially on my site.
Any help here would be hot.
Hey Shari I remember why not just use an anti spam word or something. Actually I tried to omit that but sometimes my Spam Karma 2 cant manage to hold off everything. So I must have a first line of defense
despite your being on dial up, you are able to do a lot of things, Shari! what more if you are on DSL. you know, DSL was the best thing that ever happened, at least in my family’s internet life.
cannot say much about RSS and all and the geeky staff, they are all not only geek, but greek to me as well!
“stuff” pala, not staff
Oh, err. *Basecamp* I think I don’t know where to start. LOL
FruityOaty: Who knows? I might post a picture with my nipples taking a peek or something, lol. Pr0n! Nyay, I’m not A-list blogger. Told yah, PBA is link bait!
Spams attack my site in its usual number. What irritates me is the number of trackback spams. Grrr. Don’t you dare leave the blogosphere, hear? That’s a direct order from Ms. Rockstar.
Eric: I turn images on when I visit your site, of course.
You CAPTCHA user!
It’s very easy to beat/decode yours though, lololol.
Kai: You kidding me? I totally dig your content!
Jhay: Yay, finally! That’s music to my ears. Errr. An eye candy. The Basecamp needs a kick-start so we’ll all learn about standards. I occasionally write about it, but…Well, others explain it better than I do. I tend to digress a lot, ehehe.
Chase: A nice solution, but still not as effective as CAPTCHAs, which are so effective they even kick human users in the butt and tell them they’re spam bots.
Sexy Mom: I wish I were on DSL. Really. I’d be a more efficient online personality, naks! Haha! Naku, somewhere down the road, you’d understand at least some things about the geeky stuff.
Aja: I think that too. Brilliant idea, eh? But hard to get started, lol. Teka, will login to YM na nga.
lol naked css website people …
anyway .. im on dial up too! *high5* not that im proud of it but you know .. i thought i was the only one thats still on dial up out there.
Aww Hello ate Shari ako din I got naked pero 24 hours lang yung sinet ko hahahahahaha
. Ang cute cute ng mga smilies mo
.
By the way ako gumagamit ako ng Spam Filter Pero diba ang CAPTCHA is image? Kasi sakin words na may sasagutan ka.
I dont know pero i put it kasi ang dami kong narereceive na spams so hayun.
I hate CAPTCHA din lalo na pag sa ibang blogs/community site tapos hindi pa masyadong mabasa nakakabadtrip
OoOoOoOps di ko nailagay website ko hahaha.
i actually have seen a lot of sites that got naked during that day, hhmm.. well, web standards for CSS,,, uhm.. i kind of agree with it, too.
anyway, please do edit my link na po, ate.
SAYANG NDE KO NAKITA! hihi masyado ata ako naging busy sa holy week…
hayaan mo shari…
makikita ko rin minsan ung naked… misteryosa. hihi
Your smilies are the cutest things I have seen in a very long time. I heard about Naked Day and went to a site that was participating in it…It was quite an interesting sight to behold, haha. I’d be lost if I visited sites without images for the reasons you stated exactly, since a lot of sites I visit have those verifications. Informative read, thanks.
Aichee: Yebah! *high five* Are we extinct or what?
Sherica: Anti-spam words can be a…nice…alternative, but not nearly as effective as some people think it is. I understand the thought of other bloggers that they need CAPTCHA to prevent spams, but most of them don’t know that they actually also prevent legitimate users from leaving a comment.
Sandra: Web standards for CSS?
Heneroso: Absent! Tsk tsk! You didn’t see Misteryosa in its nekkid glory, sayang, haha!
Holly: Interesting, if done properly. Hehe. But it was a nice experience altogether. Glad to know that you think the entry is informative.
Haven’t dropped by in ages! I think mostly because I’m not much into politics at the moment — don’t hit me! But I see you’ve been all about the naked lately :-p
You’re still on dialup?? But you’ve been online for so long, time to get broadband!!
I am a coding addict! I love doing blogs from scratch. You’re an expert in wordpress! I will read your previous posts and links. I am thinking of upgrading mine to 2.1.3 but dunno how…
And I also don’t like blogs with loads of images. Also, on dial-up so it really is load-consuming for me to wait for a page to fully load. Come on, write something about it, Shari!
Btw, happy easter!
Out of post comment [I hope you won't mind.
]:
Happy Easter, Shari!
Anyway, I’m also using dial-up and I agree, sites with soo many images are pain in the a55.
And and and.. congratulations to a successful naked day for dear Misteryosa.
shari!happy easter
i wonder how my wesbite looks like when you visit (images off)magulo cguro hehe,.aniways broaddband ka na..
We dial-up users should form a club.
I’m using the math comments something plugin (with akismet) to combat spam and I have no idea how it effective it is or how it affects PWDs. Hmmm… =\
Kat: Haha, you bad.
I’m getting old online, but that doesn’t mean that my wallet gets fatter.
Sasha: I also love coding — save for the colors part.
Dyei: I wish they were on dial-up too. Just so they know how it feels to wait for their own CRAPPY HEADER IMAGES. Really.
Meckay: Can’t afford eh.
Anne: That kind of challenge that requires “thinking” basically is inaccessible to people with cognitive disabilities. So it’s still an accessibility issue.
pssst, just a thought, if you’re going to refer to the FAQ with number, don’t you think you should make it an ordered list instead?
Mae: That’s been noted even before I published the post, but I’m too tamad to edit it. I don’t think I’d even change it ever
I rarely make edits even for the simplest coding & grammar errors lololol.
ahihi. naked misteryosa? waa! ahihi.
nakakainis ung mga sites na sa laki ng size ng pics, tuloy ambagal magload.. wala silang consideration sa mga ‘dial up people’ na kagaya natin. ahihi.
salamat sa pagbisita.
woo.. just imagine if you are in dsl. hehe…
i dont like those CAPTCHAs too… but i tend to be patient with them… but of course… when im in a hurry i just shrug it off and cmment some other time…
oh and to answer your question sa comment mo:
what I mean the cottage you use when you just go there to swim. the open-cottages… the ones you cant sleep in. it’s 75. :P
I hate CAPTCHAs, there are even some CAPTCHAs that are very hard to read that is why I can’t comment in some blog.
ako dn d ko gets un pggng naked ng site na yan hhehe peroo GRATS! haha un!
akala ko ako lang pwede mag geek/greek
kadire, andami nyo nag bawld. lololol
Aww man, I missed seeing your blog naked. Again, again!! Hahaha.
In campus there’s a computer which uses a text-only browser. Most of the time I use that because it is really much faster, when I’m impatient enough with my researching and stuff.
Maybe I should download a text-only browser…Right now, I just turn the “Basic Page Style” option off on Firefox.
uy di yun image ang spam keycode ko ha. ahahah text yun. i think u can still see the keycode even if the images are turned off.
i jaz cant bear the spam comments anymore. sensya ka na. ahahaha
Dang, Shari, you post something this geeky and hordes of people still reply with comments?! What the hell is going on?! Are you testing your fanbase? hahaha

Deejay: Right on. And they call themselves good, hmp!
Tina: I can be patient, but really, does it have to take me 10 tries before my comment gets posted? Asar, hehe. Cheap talaga yung place! Kung mura lang pumunta dyan….
Christian: True enough.
Jeff: YOU are more GEEK/GREEK than I am. LOL!
Juice: Too bad you can’t do the same when you’re visiting some blogs, noh?
Ellie: Good enough. But when using text-only browsers, you’re actually finding out what it feels like for PWDs when they surf the net. No mouse, just keyboard. Hirap! Hehe!
Eric: Yep, text nga lang, that’s why it’s fairly easy to defeat the anti-spam feature you’re using. I’ll give it a few months, and I bet you’re gonna start receiving gazillion spams again.
Ate Ems: I’m trying my best to visit all the sites I frequent and returning comments.
But you know me, I actually read everything before posting a response. I have still about 30+ sites to visit. And hehe, I still read your entries (feed reader).
Kaya nga po CAPTCHA are a great disadvantage to some users. Yung available alternatives naman eh ganun din. Yung Math challenge affects people cognitive disabilities (like me haha). Yung sound naman, pano nga pag walang speakers. Hirap eh. Pero ako naman, I hardly receive spam comments (yung mga galing lang talaga sa legitimate users ang nakukuha ko madalas, ahem ahem). Yung spam emails, still the usual pa rin, at nasa Spam folder na agad. Hmmm….
Benj: Haha try reading the comments.
Especially the one a few comments above you. Haaay.
Hey, happy Easter. I found out about that Naked Day through this site, nakahabol naman.
Thanks for the info, the link back and for being nice. Cheers!
Mozilla has this plugin for web developers where you can disable images, css, forms, etc. It’s a cool plugin! I tried using it in my site and whoa gyera!! I’m so tamad to fix XHTML stuff Hehe. Argh, I hate the javascript errors from the W3C validator.
I follow strict standards when it comes to client sites. My previous company required us to do so…pero sa site ko walaa, sobrang tamad haha!
Happy easter!
Response to :
yikes! dami mo ng comments dito mga 50+ na so that means you will have to visit 50+ sites again! hahahahha
yeah may disadvantage talaga.. but then again all things in the world naman have their pros and cons eh. wala naman perfect … laging meron disadvantage over the other .. laging meron “the best” and rarely (or none if i should say) na masasabing “ITO ANG PINAKA THE BEST SA LAHAT WALA NG TATALO DITO” hahahhaha
I wonder what my blog looks like without images… ;-)
Happy Easter!
whoa. what happened here? you blog looks different… it evolved. lol
i was just away for a while and now you’re writing about stuff like these. haha
bacl n’ bloggin’!!
Yea content is important but the design is important too. I mean it would keep visitors coming back heh.. I guess I have to really add more cotnent on my website especially the blog. I have to post something interesting eh haha…
You make a valuable point with the captchas. I don’t use it, but that would make it hard for some people.
Shari, ang yabang ah.
Can you snort a venti frap up your nose in 1 minute?! I bet you can’t do that! Yipeee! I rock!!!
Hi Shari. Glad that your CSS Naked Day is doing well. Hope many have learned from your objective. I’m having problems with my site lately. HaloScan is being so uncooperative. I regret ever signing up for it on the first place. I signed up for a premium account, hoping it won’t go haywire again. It also has an option that allowa exporting of comments which is why I upgraded my account.
Anyway, thank you for your Easter greetings. I really appreciate it. Sorry wasn’t able to visit sooner ‘coz we were out the whole day. I’ll share more about my fun day on my blog soon. Need to visit more blog friends for the mean time before making any new posts.
Take care!
I haven’t said something against CAPTCHA’s before but I was close to having said something.
That’s why I’m ultra sticky to my Math comment anti-spam plugin (although I screwed it up before). In reality, we can never totally get rid of spam. Even Gmail or Yahoo’s alogarithms are not 100% invulnerable against them.
Yey for web standards! I’m so glad someone who has vocal powress is advocating it. (Meh, I never really had such.) If you need help, I’m just a button away.
Bah, I’m a mediocre coder. Anyways, I hate huge ass headers, too. If I could, I’d go with a simple text header, but I like having my face there :P
i never understood the purpose of captcha and i still dont think i do. lol. my layout headers are pretty big eh? lol. i think its cuz i like having large images on the top. i think i should try something different next time. he he.
hmm..
wala naman 90 percent content, 10 percent layout..
tingin mo? hehe…
Hahaha! I remember writing about CSS Naked Day more than a year ago, saying that it’s pointless and unnecessary and all bullshit and stuff. Pardon! I really had no idea what I was yakking about back then! Oh well, couldn’t blame a newbie such as myself! And thanks to you, now I’m informed!
Am still pretty new to web standards and web accessibility… Thanks for enlightening me!
I thought Naked Day was so annoying, because my internet always cuts off in the middle of loading so sites sometimes show up with no CSS. That day, I could hardly tell if it was my internet screwing over again or if the site really was naked. :P
My comments section isn’t semantically correct… I’d love to fix it one of these days, but I’m too lazy/intimated by all those Wordpress tag thingers.
Hi Shari!! ^-^ I’ve finally fixed that horrid problem! You can post again now! Wow… even on naked day, your page seems the same. Props to you because I can never do that!
Wow aminado “I seriously suck in image manipulation and colors.” haha
Papalit na ng links ha Thank U!
ahihihi natutuwa naman ako… ika 69 commenter si LA. ahihi
