Misteryosa Featured in Manila Bulletin’s Blog-O-Rama

EDIT: Labor Day! Not sure if I’d join a (small) mob later or not, but I wish everyone luck. Take care, people!

My super duper long interview with Annalyn Jusay of local broadsheet Manila Bulletin (wiki) for her weekly column Blog-O-Rama was published yesterday. It was prompted by my win for the Personal Category in the recently concluded 2007 Philippine Blog Awards. Who would have thought, right?

Philippine Blog Awards at the Manila Bulletin I wasn’t able to get a hardcopy of the April 9 issue of the same paper. PBA was the highlight. Good thing Markku scanned the page, else I wouldn’t even know what pictures were included there. And…*cringes* Good thing I didn’t stand beside the ever famous Bryanboy.

Anyway, the online version of the interview seems to be not available yet, and because the USB connector of the scanner is nowhere to be found (as usual), I just took a picture of the page instead of scanning it. And I’ll just post a written transcript. If you think it’s long, think again. It’s not even everything, if you know what I mean, hehe. I really have this tendency to either digress or blabber endlessly.

Aside: I sound so horny phony in this interview. Probably because I am, haha!

MISTERYOSA:
“Blog to express, not to impress”

MISTERYOSA: "Blog to express, not to impress" She is more known by her domain name “Misteryosa” though there is really nothing so mysterious about her who has one of the most candid and engaging blogs we’ve encountered in the local cyberspace. Misteryosa is Shari Cruz, a 19-year-old college student who calls herself a “rebel and self-proclaimed writer.” She has also been blogging since she was a teenager and is considered one of the Philippines’ top bloggers by virtue of the number of other sites who link to her, as tracked by Technorati. She is also a staunch advocate for web standards and web accessibility, especially for persons with disabilities. Recently, Misteryosa surprised some quarters by winning Best Personal Blog in the just-concluded Philippine Blog Awards. Here’s the celebratory interview:

Q: How do you feel winning in the Blog Awards, considering that you were pitted against great bloggers/writers? Will this win add a new dimension to your blogging?
Ecstatic! The passionate anonymous love letters I sent to the gods and goddesses aka the judges promising them all sorts of things must’ve worked. I’ve fooled them, I’ve fooled them, mwahahaha! Let’s just hope they don’t withdraw the decision.

Seriously speaking, I was completely shocked. A friend blogger who was also there during the event said that I looked funny when I received the heavy trophy on stage after the emcees announced “MIS-TER-YOW-SA” as the winner for the Best Personal Blog. And heck, THE Jessica Zafra’s blog (the blog, only the blog, I don’t want to get PWND!)? C’mon! If Jessica rules the universe, then I…I…I’m completely at her feet.

Honestly, I became stressed after winning. Interviews, TV guestings, stalkers, fans…Gawd, it’s been a crazy month for me! The blogging mojo (blojo) wore out after a while, and I felt totally uninspired. But maybe I just felt like that because I was expecting people to expect something from me. So yes, the win did add a new dimension to my blogging — the pressure. I had to remind myself that it really shouldn’t change anything at all, that I’m still this simple young lady blogger with no love life to speak of.

Q: What’s in the name “Misteryosa?”
Great question! Actually, I’ve been asking myself that very same thing too! ;) I don’t know or even remember how I came up with the domain name.

But really, you’ve got to admit that the name is quite eye/ear-catching, and it certainly has a recall factor. I’ve had it since December 2005 as misteryosa.org, so I stuck with it. But I’ve long ago ceased to be, strictly speaking, mysterious. I don’t think misteryosa fits me anymore. Sharicruz.com has already been snatched by some real estate agent in Florida, too bad. Now if someone would just buy me the domain sharicruz.com.ph…. *hint, hint*

Q: When did you start blogging and what reasons got you started? How do you describe your love affair with blogging after all these years?
High school life, oh my high school life. Probably the hardest years of my entire pathetic life by far. I was oozing with not just sex appeal and raging hormones, but also teenage angst. High school — full of very unpleasant memories. I was into web designing back then, but blogging became a venue for me to vent out and release my frustrations in life. Details are not of great importance. I just like to think that my blog shows how and why I’ve matured over all these years.

My love affair with blogging has had its ups and downs, as the case with all other relationships. But I love it. It has this therapeutic effect that helps me keep my sanity — or whatever’s left of it. Blogging is fast. It can keep up with my thoughts better than writing ever could. Blogging makes me a better writer. My grammar has improved drastically since I started writing online regularly. (If you think my grammar is hideous, you should read my earlier blogs!) Blogging also gives me orgasmic pleasure. It’s such a boost to my ego whenever I receive comments from different people, all sharing with me their own experiences and thoughts. It’s great to meet and socialize with people even in the online world.

But do you know what’s the greatest thing about blogging? It’s learning. Learning to share, learning to appreciate, learning to LEARN. And in line with this, you’re learning from other people, with other people — with the idea that it’s highly possible that they’re learning something from you too.

I love blogging, and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t love me back.

Q: If, instead of winning that trophy, you were made to wish something that will be granted, what wish would it be, and why?
Lemme see…A spiffy laptop, a broadband/DSL connection (I’m only on dial-up, sad sad reality), honest politicians (if only I could wish harder), DSLR camera, my own car that never runs out of gas…And oh, a boyfriend. Hehe.

Seriously? World peace. And maybe even some cash.

Q: Can you name one great person you’d like to meet in real life?
I would have said Annalyn Jusay so I could torture her to feature my blog on Blog-O-Rama, but since I’ve already met her, well…I guess I’d have to go with Bob Ong. He can be considered as a “great person,” right? He’s not exactly the best writer, technically speaking, but I like his humorous writings. He definitely knows his politics, and he captures readers from all walks of life. Nakakarelate kasi mga Pilipino sa mga sulat niya, that’s why he’s such a hit. I’m really intrigued on how he speaks in real life.

Q: Are you in favor of instituting a Bloggers’ Code of conduct?
Definitely NOT. No way. Nuh-uh.

I know a lot of our prolific bloggers support this idea, but I’ve experienced cyber-bullying myself in the past, the same thing Kathy Sierra went through. I know where she’s coming from. But I had my own way of dealing with things, and I did what I thought was right and what could save my ass at the moment.

And that’s just it. We all react differently in just one situation. We have different levels of tolerance, different definition of “unacceptable content”, different opinions, different “rules”. Our blogs have different sets of audience, who, in turn, have their own different definition of what “civility” is. Everything is self-moderated. Why make such a big deal out of it? It’s just pointless.

It might even become a ground for calling someone a responsible blogger or not. Let’s say one person visits my blog and looks for the badge (a badge, goodness!) before leaving a mark. If the person sees no badge (holy guacamole, a badge!), he/she would tag me an irresponsible blogger, and that’s just because I don’t follow the code. Huh? Ang saklap, dude! That’s definitely uncalled for. It can border on elitism. Moreover, there are so many loopholes in the current draft of the code that even the widely adopted Bloggers’ Rights ( http://www.eff.org/bloggers/) gets ignored.

Why don’t we just say freedom of speech is not absolute, that with this freedom also comes responsibilities on our part, and be done with it? Even if you put the stinking badge to your site, it still wouldn’t change a thing except that, well, you have a stinking badge on your site. It’s not gonna stop hateful and violent comments. It’s not gonna keep the trolls at bay.

It’s not that I’m against the initiative; I just won’t support it because it is unnecessary. Thanks, but no thanks. If we need ground rules because the blogosphere is maturing, let’s do these rules individually, and leave the others alone. It’s a matter of personal preference.

And because I just couldn’t resist: Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges!

Q: Considering how tech-savvy your generation is already, would you support an initiative that would teach blogging in schools and related topics like podcasting?
No. It would be a nice thought, but let’s just focus on “reinforcing” the existing subjects more instead of introducing a new one. The current curriculum, I think, is not strong enough to accommodate blogging as a completely independent topic. I disagree with this initiative simply because blogging is a personal choice. I can just imagine some people getting a “hard-earned” singko just because they don’t blog the way their professor wants them to. Duh? Let’s take things one step at a time. Web standards and accessibility can be taught in computer-related courses (hehe), but blogging is and should always be a hobby. Or passion. Let the people discover by themselves the wonders of blogging. Let the people explore their own creativity.

Q: What advice can you give to aspiring/struggling bloggers on blogging well?
A month ago, someone emailed me and told me she’s impressed with my blog because it receives a lot of comments, and a lot of people seem to be reading it. She asked me how I managed to drive huge traffic to my site. I couldn’t answer the question because I really didn’t mean to develop a wide readership of my blog, and truth be told, I hardly noticed its growth in the first place. The good thing about blogging early (years ago, when Friendster didn’t even exist boo) is that I didn’t have money and traffic in mind when I started doing it. I just blogged “to express, not to impress,” which is, and should be, the very essence of personal blogging.

Traffic will come. It will, I swear. I started off with about 5 regular readers, and after more than half a decade, look at where I am right now. You can’t expect numerous readers within a month just like that. Blog for yourself. Write about whatever you want to write about. Blog about your advocacies (this is very effective). Speak your mind. Your transparency on your blog will be its huge attraction for most people. Treat your blog as something that you would like your future children and grandchildren to inherit and treasure. Know your rights, but know your responsibilities more as a blogger. And when you think you’ve reached your goals, seize the moment. Blog to entertain. Blog about something like, say, your chair, but be creative and unique enough to stand out. Blog to impress. Monetize your blog (I’m hearing the “Speak for yourself!” quips everywhere, shut up, shut up!) if you must. But until that time, keep it simple. Not all of us are overnight sensations, and we really shouldn’t try to be. Darating din tayo dyan. :D

Blog to make a difference. Blog effectively by successfully getting your message across.

Share. Learn. Inspire.

That was a very fun read, Shari. Your anti-establishment leanings were so palpable - I was almost moved into tears when you chose to be defiant and push for a “free” blogosphere.

The whole Bloggers’ Code of conduct is as stupid as the whole MTRCB idea. What kind of idiot would support such an initiative? Nazis? Bigots? Ah. Yes. People who can’t grasp logical arguments. Marami ngang ganun.

Do I have to congratulate you again (since this is a celebratory interview)? hehe

  2. Nina

Nako shari, i dont want to say this kasi lalaki yung ulo mo eh (joke lang ah!) pero i`ll say it anyway… mwahaha. nakaka inspire nga itong blog mo eh.. Nakakatuwa how you’ve grown to a better writer/blogger since nung diaper days mo pa sa blog-world.

Tapos you won award/s pa out of blogging, how cool is that? And alam mo, the way this interview went, napaka totoo mo. I mean, compared don sa mga ibang interviews na nabasa/narinig ko (not necessarily have to be about blogging/bloggers) eh ang p-plastic nung mga sagot nila.. pero ito, totoong totoo.. Well I guess dahil na din sa pagkakakilala ko sayo through your writings. Keep it up Shari! Good job! =) I’m proud of you!

And btw, keep me updated naman about don sa code of conduct na sinasabi. Ala akong alam dyan? Does it apply only to Philippines? Or all over the www? Hmm.. I should search about this. Or u can email me about it. Mwahaha.

  3. Ann

Nice! Sabi nga ni fruity, rockstar status na ito haha
Pero teka, pano ka nila napapayag na magpa-interview?

Seriously though, I’m so proud of you :)

  4. Deanna

That’s so awesome that you won! I enjoyed reading your interview. You have a very good way to getting your point across and it’s entertaining to read. I find it so weird when I see that bloggers are getting together in person. I tend to keep my online and offline lives apart. That would be just too weird for me haha.

  5. mats

 wow!!! kung naging ate mo ako, di lang kita basta i-congratulate, may hugs and kisses pa na kasama!!

but since we met though blogging lang, CONGRATULATIONS SHARI for winning the PBA Personal Blog Awards (of course) and syempre for being featured on Blog-O-Rama. :boogie:

at dahil dyan, *whispers* treat naman jan! (juz kidding)

  6. Massa P (aka "fruitcake")

You really are a rock and roll chickameister. Just all kinds of awesome. Plenty of us bathe in your afterglow. Alright, I’m just kidding, because that’s just all kinds of creepy. LOL. ;) (BTW, your last entry is all kinds of digital EMO bits and bytes.. Well, I hope you get your desired outcome, whatever that may be… with your self-respect, intact.)

    Good stuff.

And re: your comment about Filipino blog ranking ratified.org… Yeah, I was ruminating on your words last night… I just realized that I wasn’t as elated as I thought I would be to finally be on a potentially well-known Filipino blog ranking system (that Alleba dude added me recently)… I just realized that it’s really not the quantity of conversations I’m after… it’s the “quality” that I care about… but I suppose, getting some exposure in the past recent months did me some good towards that goal of attracting “quality” people conversations.

See, people have different reasons for blogging… but a large part of it for me was about connecting to my ethnic roots. I grew up in Canada for almost all my life… didn’t really have “Filipino” friends (just one in grade school and I HATED her)… and this year, I’ve been learning a lot about what it means to have that missing part of me… filled bit by bit. Is that corny? Yeah, it is.

There’s so much I don’t know about the Philippines… nor did I ever care to visit it. Always went to other countries for vacations… it’ll be different now.

  7. Shari

Benj: Agreed. Can’t seem to find the sense/logic/reasonable reason in it either. No need to congratulate me again, haha. Loko. I’m fighting for your right…not that you asked for it anyway, hehe. :p

Nina: Catch you on IM later again (I hope). You’re one of those people who have seen me grow online…Buti andyan ka pa. :D Sure, will keep you updated on the bloggers’ current kalokohan, haha.

Ann: Because it’s only through email. Yung sa Inquirer kasi, interview (podcast ata) talaga. Eek! Stutter, stutter lang ako pag ganun, haha!

Deanna: Thanks. :) The Filipinos are sooo BIG on communities. We have this tie that binds us all together. ;)

Mats: Ate naman kita ha! Ate kita! ATE! Haha! Thanks po! ;) La pera. :p

Massa P: I knooowwww…I laughed at my previous post. WTF, did I write that?! Haha!

Re: blog ranking…it really depends on how you look at it talaga. It’s great to belong in one because it strengthens “unity” among Filipino bloggers. But then, to actually rank based on some unreliable stats, well…Haha. It just doesn’t measure genuine readership. But I still commend Sir Andrew for it. One possible way of finding other quality blogs. :D

I like your reason, Fruity. And I’m sure you’re learning a lot now. I hope to see you when you come visit. Yay! :D

  8. Chien Yee

That is so cool! Congrats to you, Shari! Sorry I’m not commenting much about his, but I’m in a rush :P

  24. Richmond

You know what Ive been reading your blog since May 2006… nahihiya lang akong makilink at magcomment because you really are a good writer (with a cute avatar photo). wink wink hehe

  28. Arlo

Damn. I love your answers. Doesn’t it pressure you too much? I mean, now that misteryosa.com is published in a very renowned broadsheet, do you now somehow require yourself to publish brilliant entries regularly? I’m giving you kudos for it. And definitely, you deserve the spotlight. Carpe diem!

  29. Joni

Kakaiba ka, Shari! Congratulations! You deserve it, girl!

  30. Jhed

Hey! Congrats on your win and for being featured in blog-o-rama.

Chette: Overused nga eh, kasi it’s really a “motto” of writers. ;)

Ate Ghee: If fame means success, maybe I am successful. But there’s still so many things I want to do… :D

Arlo: There’s the pressure, but I try hard not to give in. My blog wouldn’t be personal anymore if I come up with brilliant entries regularly. It gets old. I like variety. ;) And thank you. Thank you for the kind words. :)

Fjords: Haha, it’s easily forgettable naman, no sweat haha. Thanks!

Gean: Onga eh. Dati konti lang tayong magba-blogmates. Yung Lita kong layout, naku, light blue yun. :p 2004 pa yun. Gusto mo makita? It’s still up. I was still using frames, small font, blinkies, anything cute. Geesh, kadirs. Haha!

    anyway, i love this part:

    Response to :

that’s also my view in blogging :D what appears good to me may not be that good to you. that’s also the reason why i don’t promote blogging standards because each blogger has his own. :D

congratulations for being on the newspaper :D haha

I remember when I first started visiting your wesbite at misteryosa.org, and reading all the anti-Shari comments and wondering why these orcs were so passionate about trying to put you down– and in the most inane ways imaginable. LOLOLOLOL, lookie now.

  42. Caitlin

That’s so awesome. Congratulations. Your interview was interesting too. I don’t think you sound phony.

  43. Sidney

    Congrats! Nice interview!

  44. Lona

Wow, I wish someone wrote an article about me now, haha  This was one great interview, btw. Sounds like you have been giving interviews every now and then.
Anyway you asked what issue I’m having with Q&A script. :blank: I just can’t instal it, that’s it. Everytime I try I mess up something. :shake:

  45. Jeff

in case you missed it, the guy who volunteered the idea of a bloggers’ code of conduct took it back and said it wasnt a good idea in the first place. bleh. tinatamad ako maghanap ng link. we have google for that. hehe

  46. Laarni

    OMIGOD. MY HOST.

  47. Shari

Janelle: Ako rin eh, PDI talaga ako.

Dotep: Dude, I’m brrrroke. Di ka kasi pumunta nung SEB eh.

Helga: Because…I don’t like Pacman? Harhar!

Lona: What Q&A script are your using? :)

Jeff: Tim O’Reilly (sp?)? Good. Haha. Buti nagising siya sa katotohanan lololol!

Laarni: Wedding gift ko sayo? ;)

  52. Alternati

Hey Shari! Congratulations on the broadsheet feature. well deserved!!! Look at you all articulate and famous, hehehe… But it’s really great you haven’t changed at all after the win. You’re still the endearing girl lady everyone in the blogosphere loves.

AT first I thought the interview was done in person, then I saw the “*wink*”s and the side comments in parentheses.. hehehe…

Had a marvelous time reading the article. Sayang I wasn’t able to purchase a copy of the newspaper… I’m no an indefinite newsfast kasi. hehe… Would love to read the whole thing. :)

  53. Neil

hahahaa. You are totally WICKED! Congrats again. Whohoo. Your freakin stupid blog on a broadsheet! Sheet! Pangarap ko yan kahit pseudonym lang.

Pero from all the broadsheets out there, sayang that it’s not PDI. Pfft. Who cares? YOU’RE ON A NEWSPAPER, BABY! Hurrah!

And oh btw, i was laughing silently while reading the interview (emailed perhaps?). Silently? Pfft. I’m using a PC inside a room where my Kuya, my Mom, and my bunso are sleeping on the same bed. :shakefist:

  54. Neil

And oh… what plugin are u using for the ‘instant correct your own comment’ thingy here? You know, i’m a starter in wordpress. Tulungan mo kami, bathalumang shari.

    :yay:

  55. Krystalistic

:boogie: Congratulations on you Blog Awards win ! I really enjoyed the enjoyed the interview. That was very nice.

  56. Nan

Congratulations Shari. I must say that they really make a big deal out of blogging in the Phillies. Here in Denmark it is pretty much considered a waste of time.

  57. Teelia

Wow, you are so amazing to get it posted up like that! Wow, so is blog a really huge thing in the Philippines? I’m trying to definitely get it up there, but I’m so lazy as well. Any good tips?? ^-^

  58. Nini

I read the article monday morning and I thought you were great. Your thoughts on the blogger’s code of conduct issue was right off the mark. I don’t know where you get all your creative juices but I hope that you never run out, and yes, you do inspire me to express and not to impress.

Nickle: Thanks! The interview gets boring in a while, hehe.

LA: Yung tinanggihan ko is the interview invite from Inquirer right after the awards night. Podcast ata, hehe! Yoko! :p

Alternati: Awww, thank you! Hehe. Eek, I wouldn’t have agreed for an interview if it was live. Kahiya. ;)

Neil: Wahehe, PDI’s progressive, baby! I would have loved to be featured there as well. Does Inquirer come close enough? Coz they did ask me for an interview a few minutes after the awards in Makati. ;) Will comment back about the plugin. Boo!

Tee: Blog is beginning to be a “craze” in my small country. Tips? Just…blog. Haha. ;)

Nini: Thank you. I’m glad that even though my interview was full of crap, I’ve inspired some people to just…express themselves. Weeeh, I really do hope my creative juices never run out, but unfortunately, it already did. ^_^
