Feels Great to be Pinoy!
Sir Andrew dela Serna — yes, yes, the one who made Ratified.org — has tagged me. I think I’m beginning to be a favorite pawn of people who don’t have anyone else to nag tag, but then, I really don’t mind. Much. Hmm.
Anyway, the culprit of the meme I’m about to answer is none other than the SEO extraordinaire Marc Macalua. He asks the meme victims what 3 signs they see happening now that make them shout out, “It feels great to be Pinoy!”
Funny, really. All the while I’ve been writing about what sucks about the Philippines and the Filipinos: crime, election, child abuse, laziness, greed, bigotry, etc. I’ve even written once (or more than once, maybe) that Filipinos are too proud to realize that their pride has blinded them and clouded their judgment. I blogged about Manny Pacquiao’s then-victory in boxing, but then I bashed him like crazy and called him a monkey, and got harassed and famous for it. Okay, so PinoyStupid called him a monkey first and I really just got it from him, but that’s not the point.
My blog reflects badly on my beloved country, I realize. I should really read more magazines than newspapers; the former holds more good and feel-good news than the latter. It’s just hard to be somewhere between being a pessimist and being a realist. It seems that whenever one can easily think of a reason to be a proud Filipino, I can counter that thought just as easily. I’m just that bad, you know?
Truth be told, I am having a hard time thinking about what to write here. It’s not funny. I’m simply not proud of the the same obvious things that the others are. I guess I see so much injustice and suffering around me that I reached a certain point of hopelessness and frustration.
But here’s my list. They’re just minor stuff, really. I can think of a lot of other, more “wowable” reasons to be proud Pinoy, but these simple things are from where I’m coming from (what?!).
- Like Andrew and Marc (shuttap, first name basis kaming lahat, haha), I’m glad that Filipinos have become smarter and more critical when it comes to voting for celebrities in the Senate (yeah, I’m trying to avoid the fact that Aiko Melendez won in our district). I mean, no top spots for both Richard Gomez and Cesar Montano yet in the partial and unofficial count of COMELEC, right? I’m relieved.
- More and more Filipino youth have become more vigilant and are now taking their social roles and responsibilities seriously. Screw Tim Yap and his minions if they want to party all night long! At least the initiative of some youth groups and individuals are not being ignored and are in fact making a solid impact in our society today.
- The Filipinos (well, some) are making their voices heard worldwide. The great recognitions brought by numerous people for our country are something to be proud of. The brilliance of people like Mikaela Fudolig who have the potential to make a difference. And of course, there’s blogging.
At the end of the day, I think I really need no reason to feel proud for being a Filipino. I just do; I’m proud to be a Filipino, and that’s how it is.
Ten people are about to get tagged, and they are Jhay, Pierre (I don’t know if you do this kind of stuff, but it’d be interesting to know what “signs of hope” you’re seeing now), Bikoy (well, at least after you get back from the US), Joni, Mae, Noemi, Jhed, Xyla, Blogbastic, and Melai. Hope to hear from all 10 of you soon! ![]()

first to comment. feels wierd to be the first one here. but…..its cool that you’re proud to be Pinoy. im very proud to be Indian and i hate it when Indians who live abroad say bad things about India. so….if i had to do this, i would have a pretty long list. lol. but, i aint Pinoy, so……
Jumping junipers! I’ve been tagged!

I can’t blame you really, Philippines is slowly becoming a hopeless case. Sa gobyerno palang, bagsak na tayo. But alas, like what you mentioned in your 2nd statement.. the youth nowadays are aware of their surroundings and trying to make the a difference.
So yeah, there’s still hope for the Philippines.
lol. wasn’t the pacman episode fun?
@Jhed - Do the tag ha, hehe.
@Keysi - Oh yes! Haha. It’s one online experience I will never forget. And what, Kathy Sierra actually was afraid she’d get killed? LOL.
I’d probably stare at you doing this –>
if you asked me that question. I mean there are lots of reasons to be proud but then most things I would say are just way too shallow (compared to what you’ve said). But yeah… those are reasons to be proud of being filipino. Yay! =]
Hey, it’s been a long while since some one tagged. Now I have another one t add my list of procrastinated, I mean pending list.
Will do this one right later tonight…God willing.
hey shari.. yah you;re right.. it’s great to be a filipino.. wahaha nationalistic ka na.. it also feels great to be a chinese.. haha nowadays kasi tingin nila sa mag filipinos mga swindler etc. buti pa nung past when rizal & the other heroes were alive.. tsk tsk.. matalino mga pilipino.. lalo na mga scientist but then wala lang sila support from the government
ah give me time to come up with my 3 reasons.
Hold, on. Let me inject this into my brain. Aiko Melendez ran? This is the same as when I found out (the day after the National Election day, actually) that Victor Wood ran too. XP
Well, heck. Blogs are blogs. Whatever you write is of your choice. Who cares if it’s not even good for the country. It’s people’s opinion here. I think it’s better than superficially saying that Philippines is a great country. XP
Well, I’m not Pinoy, but I can see all the reasons why it’s great to be one.
[:
ah…blogging. it’s great to belong to the pinoy blogosphere. that is a good sign
aaww… this one really made a weird feeling for me, since yea, you have been frustrated with all the injustices that’re going on here in the philippines, but yea, there are still some things that im proud of… i totally agree with the youth now — most are already taking great responsibilities especially regarding politics and all that. most people voice out their sentiments already, which is good too.
tim yap is suspended sa PDI. wala, sharing lang. LOL
Well i dont have much reasons why am i porud of being a filipino! like you im just proud of it hahahaha. Well Naawa ako dun sa mga artistang natalo . Shame on them di nila nagamit ang pagiging famous nila. And yes youtthh :D:D I was watching Kabataan Express every Saturday iba na talaga ang kabataan ngayun di lang kasi pinapansin ang mga youth sa government eh.
Ei Shari, what do you think of Susano? Wala lang, just curious.
I hate Pacquiao, lalo na my parents, we were rejoicing for his loss in the election. And hell, yeah, he’s a monkey! nyahaha! bad bad bad. I’m glad too the the Pinoy voters are much wiser not to vote a candidate based on his/her popularity. Huh, Aiko? Baka dun sa sample ballots with her face…. ehehehe.. Thanks for the link exchange nga pala.
yes, filipinos has gone smarter by an inch…
unfortunately, here in pasay, they still opted for the corrupt and bigger evil mayor, darn!
there are a lot of things to be proud for being a Pinoy. Hehe. specially your number 3 reason since more and more Pinoy are coming out and taking a stand and get recognized. hehe.
I believe that more often than not, we Filipinos are proud, simply for what we are but of course, we can’t hide the fact that our country is is very slow on improvement. But nevertheless, yay for Filipinos!
By the way, I like Tim Yap.
Just wanna share..
Hehe! thanks for the tag. kelangan ba related sa politics? wala kse ko alam dun eh, LOL. sige magiisip ako!
The question is very Pinoy…
Nobody has ever asked me if I was proud to be a Belgian!
Here I see it all the time. 10 reasons to be proud, 10 reason to be ashamed. In blogs, in newspapers, in magazines…
It looks like Filipinos are very insecure ! ;-)
Great answers! Just found about Aiko’s tactics. What a shame. Our government reeks that’s for sure. But hey, I’m still proud nevertheless.
@Sidney: So, are you proud to be Belgian? First time for everything, huh? Don’t worry about us, we’re as secure as Fort Knox.
Sa kabila ng ginagawa ni Aiko at sa kabila ng kabastusang lumalabas sa mga tabloid ni Pichay, I am still proud to be Pinoy! Shempre regionalism yan. Or something like that.
Kung hindi given na maganda at kaakit akit ang Pilipinas (including girls ehehe), would we still be proud of it? Of course, yes! Nature ng tao yon eh. Haha. Ummm…Just my opinion..Ahaha.
I guess you have forgotten to mention that our brown skin is one thing that we Pinoys can be proud of. Take it from me. And this makes me wonder why many pinoys gusto maging snow white. he he.
Despite all the worries and the problems we have, foreigners envy us because our age does not show in our faces and they wonder whether we find the fountain of youth. Perhaps this could be attributed to our having a happy disposition in life.
If you don’t believe, find a westerner with as old or as young as you and you will see the difference.
its a relief talaga na walang nakapasok na artista sa mga matataas na pwesto.. syemay ano naman kaya ang gagawin nila pag nagkataong naupo sila sa senate?? magpapacute??
Omg. haha. You tagged me. Ikaw ang salarin. lol.
Well, tama ka. The Filipino youth are becoming concerned na rin with our society and that is good to hear. Tsaka buti na lang di nanalo si Pacquiao. Haha.
Now, I have to think why am I proud to be a Filipino.
im proud to be Pinoy, there are just times that mejo hindi hehe, but that rarely happens.

Shari said,
- yeah. paranoia. lol. both of you guys received death threats, harassments and all the shit. lol. wala rin namang nangyari. one thing i learned about the internet is that 90% of the people are either fakers, posers, or lamers. of course, the remaining 10% is reserved for those blogs that we visit daily. lol.

@Lei - Darn, it’s about time! Haha!
@Darwin - I find it hard to judge Susano as a politician because I know her more as a person. She’s super religious, and her family’s rich even before politics. And I know a lot of people she has helped. So…I’m okay with her. Eh kesa naman dun kay Mathay noh, yuck! Haha!
@Joni - Di naman. Kaso shempre naiisip yun kasi election fever, hehe.
@Sidney - That’s what I’ve noticed as well. I actually asked some people if they make such a big deal about being proud of their nationality. Maybe the insecurity is brought by many years of being “inferior” to other cultures and countries. But really, even without anyone saying the reasons out loud, I think Filipinos (and even the other people, except maybe the politicians haha) are a great people.
@Sir Andrew - Thanks.
As for Aiko and the government, hmmm na lang.
@Hyro - Oh, no. I have to disagree with the “nature” thingy. I think this is more of an effect of the society in individuals. Refer to my answer to Sidney’s comment. Wala lang. Tsaka marami akong kilala tulad ni GMA who ass-kiss the foreigners, mainly because they think non-Filipinos are superior over them.
@myepinoy - I know that. Pero that’s a given na.
Besides, yung mga signs na nangyayari ngayon ang sa meme, so…
@Keysi - Woot! I think the only reason you didn’t experience the same torture is because your site was down. Hahaha!
It’s reeaaaaaaally haaaaaard to think of something that we could be proud.
I strongly agree with your number 1. I was expecting that the likes of Goma and Angelica Jones would win but I was pleasantly surprised.
It seems that the Filipinos, indeed, are learning.
done, shari. bitin, though. there’s lots more.
by the way, met jude cross yet? rather interesting experience.

joke lang. medyo na-sidetracked lang… will act on this soon.
[...] I was last tagged by anyone. The meme is quite simple, at first glance, it merely requires me to write about 3 things that make me feel proud and want to shout out that I am Pinoy or as I prefer it personally, a Pilipino. I share sentiments with Shari, as there are a hundred [...]
[...] While coming up with weird things about me is easy, thinking of 3 signs I see today that makes me feel great to be Pinoy, on the other hand, is a little mind-boggling! Don’t get me wrong. I am proud to be Pinoy. It’s just a little difficult to say why exactly. This is a tag from Shari. [...]

I’m still proud to be a pinoy even though this is a corrupted country.
grabe!! I was required to write something about the filipino youth and you gave me ideas! thanks!
i personally agree with you…akala ko nga rin mananalo yung mga artista eh…buti na lang!
