Shari, The Musical
Well, that’s rude. Must be the longest unplanned absence I’ve had since December last year. All because of a single tiny · that sucked all the blood inside me. And I’m in no mood to talk about it. I had a fever, yadda yadda blah blah.
But the past few days have served as a venue for soul-searching. What else can I do when the phone connection has been intermittent, and power has gone nuts on me? But anyway, it’s surprising to realize how much I missed on a lot of things since I started blogging regularly. Almost all of them are in line with music and love (yuck), but bear with me, eh?
The Old Songs
My precious collection of cassette tapes consists of numerous albums from The Carpenters, The Beatles, Air Supply, Stylistics, Jon Bon Jovi, The Beach Boys, The Supremes, Diana Ross, Bread, Chicago, yes yes yes — soft rock. Easy listening. I simply refer to them as classics, mainly because they are that. Maybe they’re one of the reasons why I’m not much into anything mainstream, and why I hate Nina, MYMP, and a horde of other local individual and group singers who revive and revive and…revive.
Aymishu Yayk Kweyshi
Perhaps the most humorous recorded song in the history of mankind, my rendition of Natalie Cole’s Miss You Like Crazy when I was about two years old still exists today but, sadly, only in cassette tape. The record is pure gibberish; you’d only know the song because of the melody. Listening to it makes me wonder if music influenced my life that early.
The Earlier Stints
Believe it or not, I was a member of a church choir when I was in grade school. I also joined one singing contest in school, got into the finals, and lost. Sayang naman the award of one-year contract with Center for Pop Music, but if you were a judge, what would you think of a sick contestant who half-croaked, half-coughed her way through her whole performance?
High school, I was asked by two bands to play with them. I refused. Why? I wasn’t confident enough. Good for them that I turned them down though. I heard both the bands now have regular gigs.
You Oughta Know
I’ve been a fan of Alanis Morissette since 1995 when she released her debut album Jagged Little Pill. You Oughta Know is my most favorite of all the tracks in the album. And just lately, I realized that the song hits me — bullseye. To show you just how much….
I want you to know that I’m happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both
I really am happy for the ex. If his Friendster account is any indication on how contented he is with his new life, then I dare say he’s doing more than fine now. Seems like he has put up a business now. And his status says married, so….
An older version of me
Is she perverted like me
Would she go down on you in a theatre
Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby
I’m sure she’d make a really excellent mother
The breakup was caused by an older and uglier version of me, that’s true. I mean, a woman twice his age? Yay, go him! And I know she’s perverted (albeit less than moi, methinks), else he wouldn’t make patol to her noh. Yes, the woman’s willing to have his baby. Why else would she get pregnant with his baby in the first place? She doesn’t even need another child; her oldest is a couple of years my senior.
It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
Nope, I’m not complaining. It’s been more than a year since the breakup, but it took him almost half a year to get a brand new different girl. That’s a long time…for a guy anyway.
Are you thinking of me when you fuck her
I’m sure he is/does. Haha.
Vocalists and Drummers
Is it me, or I easily get swayed by band vocalists and drummers (note: this is aside from writers)? Yeah, it’s me.
I love talking with guys who have a great voice. I can listen to them all day and never get tired. My first boyfriend is a vocalist of an unknown band from somewhere. If you ask me, he’s definitely it. He sings better than anybody I know, and he plays the guitar well. No wonder I get lovesick whenever I think of him — all those songs we sang, the magic we made, the love we shared. Yuck. Maybe the next would be a drummer. But I don’t know what it is with drummers that I like. Maybe their drumsticks skills?
TABAK 20uno: Ating (h)Istorya
When critically-acclaimed screenwriter and director Manny Palo (Deathrow, Warat), one of the founders of TABAK-Baguio, asked us if we want to release a compilation of the organization’s songs into a musical album, we immediately jumped at the idea and excitedly made the necessary preparations. I wasn’t supposed to audition, but being a member of the organization’s Music Pool, I had to. Heaven knows why I chose to sang Heaven Knows as my piece. I passed the audition, partly because, well, I was a member of the org.
The songs were recorded during the coldest months in Baguio. Rehearsals till midnight everyday took its toll, and almost all of us singers fell victims to cough and colds. Double the fun pain in recording. The song Hinihintay had been the most frustrating for me and a co-singer. It brought her tears and me headache, not only because of the lyrics, but also because of the pressure. Right at the recording studio during the recording, I was reprimanded by our sharp musical director for not hitting the right note. My voice was scratchy, and I wish it was Freshie Night once again — my only job there in the major production as a Production Assistant was a gofer. (And I don’t even need to start on our org’s Tagis Lakas presentation — I danced!!! Wearing a skirt!!! In front of the whole school community!!!)
Hard work paid off. TABAK 20uno: Ating h(Istorya) was launched on February 6, 2006 (tama ba?), the day my family and I left for a 2-week vacation in Singapore. And oh, my name is misspelled in the album. Funny.
Occasionally
I was asked to be a judge in a battle of the bands contest in Novaliches High School last November. Sang in so many occasions that I’m beginning to think I should charge the people who request for me to perform. Funny thing is, I’m not even good. I’m average at best, and horrible at worst. One can only watch my regular performance if s/he accompanies me inside the bathroom and watch me meditate.
Rosas ng Digma: Mga Awit ng Pag-ibig at Pakikibaka
I’m a sucker for good love songs, and the tracks included in Musikang Bayan’s Rosas ng Digma are good enough to make me wish I had a boyfriend. Many people have mentioned that one or two songs from the album were sung in their wedding. How frigging romantic. Even for me.
I liked a comrade once. And I told him about it. It wasn’t a pleasant experience. Imagine, an activist. And him, of all people. How terrible. Blah. (note: I admitted who he is in this post, just in case you’re wondering
)
Makes me think that maybe I find activists more appealing than the masa, as we they call the ordinary people. I’m not gonna be a hypocrite; horniness intelligence and wit turn me on. I hardly, if ever, take into consideration one’s looks — because I’m crazy like that. I dismiss superficialities, that’s why first impressions never last for me. Maybe it’s because I’ve been a subject of discriminatory and derogatory remarks all my life that I’ve become indifferent to anything that relates to looks alone. Physical beauty fades anyway, and the general sense of beauty is all but an illusion created by the society. Wow, lumalayo ata ako sa topic, haha!
Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that it’d be great if a special someone would sing to me Sana and Iisa.
Final Words
Maybe I miss being a part of something. But I’m a “when it comes, it comes” type of girl so I rarely discuss my lovelife with anyone. Maybe I’m trying to fill up the “empty space” with music. Or maybe, I’m really just a retarded freak.
Anyone who says that all the good ones are taken has got to be kidding because, hey, I’m still single! ![]()

Ah, that old nugget… the personal blog - slash - personals ad in a mask.
Kidding. Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight. Someone’s thinking of you and loving you tonight… Wait, isn’t that a song?
Alanis is even better in concert. I can still remember her awesome performance of “Ironic”. Ah, she gives good angry angst, that girl. Used to mirror my soul. (I’m slightly less angry and maladjusted now, har. I kill less people.)
Hehe, I like some of soft rock… Hehe…
Wow, you sang “Miss you like crazy”?? I love that song! Heheh. Hmm, there is a recording of me singing, but they’re all Vietnamese songs… Hahah… No one’s EVER going to see that! LOL.
Wow, crazy about your ex…
LOL about your first boyfriend. Hmm… I don’t think any of the guys I’ve ever liked could sing/was in a band… LOL.
why are all girls are attracted to drummers?
(i think i should try another profession)
When I broke up with my 1st boyfriend, I developed a liking to sad music. Weird how I wanted to feel more lonely listening to those tunes. It wasn’t easy moving on but it was just a matter of time.
They say it takes one to forget one. I really don’t know if it applies to all but I hope you can meet someone more worthy of you.
I also enjoyed Alanis’ Jagged Little Pill and I watched her concert. There were some songs that I could relate to at that time.
I wish I had the voice to join the choir but I can’t even sing a decent song.
Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that it’d be great if a special someone would sing to me Sana and Iisa.
Hey, that’s one of my dreams, too!
gusto ko ring maging vocalist para maka-attract ng mga girls…
ang kaso kapag kumakanta ako, mga multo yata naa-attract sa akin!
i like rosas ng digma. inspired me to do a poem for kuwaderno (lit folio ng slu) na ang title ay “the tibak love story”. haha
i love love luuurrrvvee the beatles
and alanis
u.p baguio ka? i’m from u.p baguio!
i know a couple of tabak people
I was also a member of our Church Choir when I was in grade school.
Mataas pa boses ko nun. Bakit ba nagiiba!!! Daig ko pa sana nun si Sarah Geronimo eh.
I have a different version of Alanis’ song, which I thought of when I broke-up with one of my ex-bfs:
An older version of me (TEN YEARS OLDER)
Is HE perverted like me
Would HE go down on you in a theatre (I’M SURE HE DID A LOT OF TIMES!)
Does HE speak eloquently (AND HAS LOTS OF MONEY)
And would HE have your baby (OF COURSE THAT’S NOT POSSIBLE)
I’m sure HE’D make a really excellent mother (FATHER!)
Ang hirap nga naman kapag ang ex mo ay isang…bading!
But I’m over it. Chika friends na ulit kami ngayon. Sort of. Hehe.
I love those old songs; they make me go lala … Haha. I guess I grew up listening to oldies and even now, I’m still lovin’ ‘em!
[:
Let’s just say…I don’t dig guys who hold instruments and mic. LOL
Anyway, wow, Shari. Long entry. And much personal info, that I could already bring this to a gossip columnist. LOL. Love…life? Yuck ba? Ahahaha
Ay, remembering old songs. Quite nice, too. Really. You get to think of…that. And a little of that. Reminisce. Ayoko na nga. LOL
@fruityoaty - You saw through me?
Hey, I love James Ingram and Linda Rondstandt! Harhar!
@paolo mendoza - The drumsticks. LOL.
@Ate Rach - I’m doing fine, Ate Rach. No need for a new one to forget the old one. Was just “thinking” and making myself more depressed, haha.
@atomicgirl - Grrr! Shucks, noh?! Whenever I listen to those songs (like, right now!) kinikilig ako ng sobra! Nakakainis!
@billycoy - Haha, di bale, kahit naman di ka kumanta naa-attract ang mga girls sayo dahil sa iyong kagwapuhan kuno. Teka, mali! Ang alagad mo pala ang tinutukoy ko!
@Lei - Naaaaxxxxx!!! Give me a copy of that naman! Sounds interesting, haha! Y’know, I feel na over-romanticized ang lovelife ng mga tibak. From the process og “paglalatag” itself down to the ridiculousness of it all. Pero that’s life of a tibak for you — pag-ibig at pakikibaka. Sheeet! I hate being sentimental, haha!
@maika - Haha, The Beatles rocks! Maybe that’s why I’m beginning to like The Bloomfields. Yaiks. Anyway, I studied in UPB for a year. I’m now in Diliman.
I miss TABAK. Sighs.
@Czian - Hah, I had a better voice when I was younger too. Baka nase-strain na kasi ang boses natin kaya ganun. Normal. Haha.
@Prudence - Haha, natawa naman ako dun. Yung first crush ko (na naging crush ko for 10 years!!!) bading din pala. Ngayong college lang naglandat lol.
@Kyels - Same here. I never grew on them songs. They’re simply fantastic.
@Yna - Huwaaaat?! Haha. Sige na nga, submit the story to Dolly Ann Carvajal.
“Anyone who says that all the good ones are taken has got to be kidding because, hey, I’m still single!”
astig mo talaga ate shari!
I’ve never really noticed the drummers or vocalists. I get attracted to guitarists. but then, I’m trying not to like guitarists because someone from my past plays the guitar. lmfao. mababaw na rason? haha!
i just noticed that not only i am quoting you on this, but it’s damn good so i’m gonna state it anyways “Anyone who says that all the good ones are taken has got to be kidding because, hey, I’m still single!” haha. i love that line. you’ll find him…. you’ll see!
i like them when they sing too. haha. anyway.. i didn’t know you sing and in front of people pa. :P
more love for us vocalists and frontmen? Thanks Shari.
Ladybugs and genteelmen, that was Misteryosa and her demo on how to secure a place for yourself in the “longest post evah” hall of fame!
Anyhoo… You a fan of Air Supply? Eew! I understand your hatred for Nina and MYMP but Air Supply? LOL! Just… LOL!
Oooh, very personal. Haha they’re definitely classics, sometimes I guilty myself because Air Supply sounds so good I just want to cry. Hahahahaha.
Lol @ Talamasca up there.
Lucky you, musican boyfriends. My gaaad, I have this thing for vocalists and drummers too. Wish I’ll be able to get one soon too
Old school ba ‘ka mo? I’ve been a #1 fan of VST and Company at ilan pang mga pogi at bigotilyong mang-aawit ng Pinoy Pop Era.
Music din ang kadalasang naging outlet ko sa buhay. Tinuruan ako ng kuya kong mag-drums nu’ng 11 years old ako.
Rak on.
Weee ate shari~! I didn’t realize that you were really a great music fan!! Heehhee i do love the classics! It must be because my parents kept on playing these songs whenever we go out or something so therefore I was brainwashed! hhahaa kidding! Glad that you’re feeling well na
hehe. Your singing when you were young reminded me of my dancing to madonna’s tunes! So embarrassing! But oh well, we were kids! hehhee. At least you were able to experience a lovelife, I haven’t, Bawls. Oh well, the night is still young! I mean.. my life. I think, hahah. Well tc now!!
“Is it me, or I easily get swayed by band vocalists and drummers (note: this is aside from writers)? Yeah, it’s me.”
Hala! should i give benj a heads-up? bwahahahah
I have the hots for guitarists.. without the unmanageable and extremely long hair. Haha!
Anyway… nah, there’s no more “anyway”.
Uy, bago ‘yan ha. Benj and Shari? Hmmm…
And, hello, ‘yung ex-bf ng isa kong ex-bf (na bading na ngayon) eh friend ko pa. Oh di ba? San ka pa? Ayus! :-)
Pasensya na, medyo windang ako ngayon. See? Kung anu-ano na na-comment ko.
Hahaha I was laughing when I read your last line…
I first heard that from Ally McBeal (errr… did I get the spelling right? hehehe)
6 months is definitely LONG for a guy! I mean most of the guys I know can move on in just about a month! hahaha
By the way, I’ve moved already. Please change your links to NEWBEGINNING.0RG.PH
Thanks!
I hope you are feeling better! Its no fun having a fever. (rouge comment)
ahihi waw Alanis Morissette! old school bwahhaha nawala ang hilig ko sa kanya nung napanood ko ugn my humps niya EWAN KO BA! hihi
anyhoo, vocalist man yan o drummer, la paring tatalo sa “writers” hihihi… or bloggers na macho gwapito katulad ko.
…ummm
sorry bwhahaha
Are you thinking of me when you fuck her
- i didn’t!
hehehe! but honestly, i don’t think of exes when i’m like doing it.
so this comment is so off-topic. lol. kill me now! wait i have to blog about something first! LOOOOL
@Isley, hehe.
Hey, I also get attracted to guitarists, but they’re too mainstream for me now. Drummers look yummier, haha!
@Patty, yeah. In about 10 years or so. I’m not holding my breath.
@Benj, sure, no problem. HAHA
@Talamasca, what? That was long? I didn’t notice, LOL! Heeey, I totally adore Air Supply. They’re weird and mushy, but they’re still good.
@Juice, hah, that’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Wish it happens again.
@Jake the Miserable, aaacccck!!! I LOVE VST & Co!!! Ahaha! Apir! Ako rin, self-taught ng flute, keyboards, at guitar. Wala akong formal lessons sa kahit ano — voice man o musical instruments. Naiinggit naman ako sayo, ehehe.
@Tiff K, it’s because I’m not as big a fan of music now as I once was. For me, good music translates to the golden oldies and other pre-2000 songs.
@Jeff, he doesn’t need it. He already knows, haha. Loko ka ha
@Jhed, I luuuurrrvvveee long hair on guys. I dunno why. Haha. Teka, maybe I know why. But I’ll save it for another post.
@Prudence, okay lang yan.
*pats back*
@Ate Ems, changed!
@Heneroso, hindi ko pa napapanuod yung vid na yun. Kawawa kasi ang dial-up ko. Hehe. Naku, macho gwapito, hmpf. LOL.
@Keysi, of course you don’t think of me, hah. LOL. But I’m sure the ex does — I’m THAT good. LOL! Kidding!!!
[...] Shari Cruz of misteryosa.com just updated her blog and posted Shari, the Musical. It’s something like the deconstruction of a song, relating to her personal life. I think [...]
Naku gusto ko din yang si Alanis. Si Papa rin peborit yun. Hehe.
Ako din gusto ko drummer. Ayoko ng vocalist. Wala lang.
wow! i like your collection! if i have the time, and money
, to collect those in CDs, i could have a record bar of my own lol..
ngayon i still like her. love her songs! i could listen to her ng paulit ulit hehe. lahat ng songs nya may story.
aww..sayang naman yung Center fo Pop! di ba pede ituloy yun? i have a friend na dun din galing. and she’s kinda planning to pursue it…if kaya pa nya daw despite the work sched..
wow! Alanis fan ka din.
you like music din pala? hehe.
i’ll give you the lit folio when you get here.
hard bound pa! haha
I used to have long hair!!! Does that count? haha
@Gean - bakit naman ayaw mo sa vocalist?
@Jenny - ako nga rin eh. hehe yung music nowadays kasi hindi na ako fan. natali ako sa nakaraan eh
@lei - huwaw! sige, go! tuloy kami, katatawag lang ni tatay sa akin. see yah tomorrow…or on Sunday…or on Monday!
@Benj - haha, you don’t want me as your stalker, do you ?
Ano bang meron sa mga drummers? Hehe!
Saka Air Supply fan din ako. Kaya lang yung lead vocalist e hindi na raw makakanta ngayon dahil nasira na raw ang boses kakainom ng alak?
Pamatay ang final words!
Aww, I hate being sick too! Hope you feel better.
I love vintage music. Beatles and Carpenters are among my dad’s CD playlists in the morning. He has the latest Carpenters bossa nova CD. Its cool. XD
Cheers to being single!
Why Shari? Magaling ka bang “stalker”?
Yeah, weakness ko din ang singers eh.
You’re back! And I’m back here, commenting. haha
Naku… Parang ayaw ko na yatang ma-involve sa isang “relationship”. I’m afraid that it would end up badly… And you sorta kinda brought me that fear… hahaha
You really do love music. I love music - I’m such a hypocrite. My music isn’t much of a variation of amazing songs, it contains cheesy Pop and some ‘cool’ (daw) RnB songs. But I don’t listen to, ugh, novelty songs that were somehow all written by Lito Camo (not that I have anything against him… ) haha
back with a vengeance, i see
sgt. pepper’s lonely hearts band. you gotta love ‘em.
also a big alanis fan. (kelangan na natin magkita at magkuwentuhan. balita ko akyat ka raw a ^_^) jagged little pill is an album i have never tired of listening to. you oughtta know is fun to sing. the attitude, beybeh, the attitude.
music is life. shari the musical is already a hit. rak on!
musikera! wow! ahmmm… yung beach boys mo na tape pahiram? hehe…
kasi peyborit ko yung “the lion sleeps tonight”
lagi kong kinakanta yung pantanggal ng stress… at epektib talaga… the lion king! grrrrrrrrs!
