The results of the Wika 2007 Blog Writing Contest are out. Congratulations to the winners!

Grand Prize: Tungo sa Panlipunang Pagbabanyuhay by Ding Fuellos
Second Prize: Naykupu! by Ynon
Third Prize: Ang Obra by Feddie Marc S. Perez
Participants’ Choice Award: Pista ng Wikang Filipino/The Spectacle of the Filipino Language by Marocharim

Ding Fuellos’ entry has been one of my favorites from the start. Actually, it’s first on my list of the best entries in the whole competition. I’m not an expert or anything; there’s just something about his post that stirs up a lot of emotions inside me. And it’s not even because he made mention of Baguio, which, as you all know, the city I fell in love with when I stayed there a few years ago.

Congratulations also to Marocharim for winning the Participants’ Choice Award. Coincidentally, he’s from…Baguio. ;) I’ve been a fan of his blog since 2005, when I “accidentally stalked” him at this ComShop behind the Baguio Convention Center, which is directly in front of our (my former) campus. We have never even personally talked with each other, if I remember correctly. Which strikes me as quite amusing, as we both (used to) hang out with almost the same crowd and place.

Misteryosa Award

I didn’t judge the entries based on anyone else’s standards but mine. There were no strict criteria followed during the process. I just read the entries as casually as I could, left a comment here and there, agreed or disagreed with some points which were made by the author, listed the notable ones I found, and waited for the organizers’ email about the result.

I did mention that those who already have a domain would be short-listed from the final list of eligible entries for the Misteryosa Award. I should think that this simple special mechanics wouldn’t be of a problem to others. I decided to do this because I wanted to give this chance to others to finally have their own domain. Besides, what would you need another domain for? Duh?

There’s one thing I would like to admit. I came up with a final list of 10 possible bloggers that would win the award. From there, I closely followed their blogs — from the content, to the habit, to even the archives of their posts. I wanted to know the people behind the blogs. Bottomline: I did not judge the Wika 2007 entries only. See, I wanted to make sure that the bloggers aren’t just one-hit wonders. Y’know, those who would come up with interesting (I repeat, for me) posts whenever something’s at stake. I wanted consistency.

Ding Fuellos would have won Misteryosa Award hands down if it wasn’t for the fact that he’s now P5000 richer, with a one-year domain registration and hosting package to boot. He would have won alongside Frances Paola G. Doplon. :D

” THE ” Filipino Language: WHAT THE HECK DOES THIS MEAN??? is not the usual “makata” entry that I’ve read (yung tipong parang talagang kinarir ng iba yung contest, hehe). It stands out from the rest because it’s fresh but still informative. Most of all, it’s critical and well-researched (kung talagang ni-research, since the writer is a “student of linguistics” eh baka alam na talaga niya yun). Its informal-but-not-that-informal approach even adds to its charm. It’s an entry worth reading, and so is the entry of Ariel C. Lalisan.

What’s so special about A Language We All Must Learn is that it’s short. Yes, it’s short. And sweet. Insightfully sweet. Although the bit about the supposed essay of a Korean about the Philippines is still doubtful (in the information’s accuracy, I’ve been told), it’s relevant to the point he was trying to make: that we must all learn the language of nationalism. Beautiful.

Congratulations to Frances and Ayel! Please respond to my email as soon as possible (teka, di pa pala ako nage-email, harhar)! :)

Trivia: Both winners wrote for Youngblood, a column in the national broadsheet Philippine Daily Inquirer.

I’d like to thank Protagonist Webhosting and Issai for the support! I really appreciate it!

I watched Jessica Soho’s show earlier, yan yung feature nila, meron pa silang actual video ng hazing, grabe, hindi na makatao, babae pa ang binubugbog ng mga fratmen. You should’ve seen her body days after that happened, ang lalaki ng pasa na halos mas madami pa yung skin na may pasa kaysa sa wala.
