Bamboo Remakes Buklod’s “Tatsulok”
Note: Edited. Added lyrics and a little backgrounder of the song. And a bunch of other things.
Thanks to Pen1, I am now aware of the buzz amongst old and new young activists alike regarding local alternative band Bamboo’s revival of a favorite Buklod classic: Tatsulok.
Reading the blog entry made my heart skip a beat. Tatsulok? Moreover, Bamboo?! Just to be sure, I, with heart pounding like crazy, dropped a visit to Bamboo’s website and sure enough, there was a link to a Tatsulok page. It took a couple of minutes for the page to fully load because the song is embedded. And….
It stirred me again the way it stirred me the first time I heard it when I was a kid. Blood rushed to my heart, to my face, to my brain, then back to my heart. Kinilabutan ako - goosebumps all over. I felt rejuvenated and excited. Giddy. Then tears just started falling from my eyes, while my heart was filling up with so much pride and joy that I thought I would just burst.
Shit! Astig! Listening to that song never fails to make me feel agitated. I wanna go to Malacañang and kick the Bush-ass-kissing midget president and her family’s sorry butts out the palace. Really. And I even expect a stupid intelligence officer reading this blog entry and planning to place me under arrest for hating GMA’s guts and posing a threat to the society.
Tatsulok is the Filipino word for triangle, which is a symbol depicting the state of socio-political structure in the country where those with power and influence (and money) are above the law (and a lot of other things, at that). The (inverted) pyramid clearly describes that the majority of the Philippine population is oppressed and suffers from injustice.

I find it not a sensible argument if Bamboo gives the song justice or not2. Listen to the bloody lyrics! Feel the bloody song! It is about bloody time that some band, and a mainstream one at that, reawakens the Filipino people’s social consciousness with the song that’s already rocking the airwaves. And to think that these kinds of music have once been a taboo.
The release of the song might be very timely because of the upcoming elections, but look beyond that. Rampant political killings. Social injustice. The crap that’s called “Oplan Bantay Laya,” which is said to be the president’s “all-out war against the terrorists” - the term terrorists used loosely because it surprisingly includes journalists, and people and students from legal leftist organizations, and even civilians. The song is not timely just because of the elections; it’s timely because everything happens right here, right now.
With lines that go, “Totoy, kumilos ka, baliktarin ang tatsulok! Katulad mong mga dukha ang ilagay mo sa tuktok,” Tatsulok screams for us to do something! See the reality that the song shows you.
The original one can be listened to and downloaded at Ate Annie’s Multiply account3. Renato Reyes Jr. has a very well-written entry that explains the history behind the song. Also, read the explanation behind the song from the composer, Rom Dongero, himself.
Ito ang musika: progresibo.
Ito ang musika: mulat.
Ito ang musika: mapagpalaya.
Please read the string of comments below. You might be able to pick something up from some discussions.
PS: If you’re from the Philippines, I highly doubt you don’t know Buklod. Kanlungan, which has been used by bloody McDonald’s in one of its bloody ads years ago4, is a Buklod5 original.
And sorry for overusing the word bloody hehe. I’m just bloody happy that Bamboo has stepped up from the stereotypical bands the likes of Cueshit (Cueshe) and Hell (Hail)6.
PPS: “There is no growth in the Philippines,” as some people think. Which I vehemently disagree with. There is. Those people who think that there isn’t are the ones who are constraining the growth. Filipinos are very diligent and intelligent students. We produce world-class nurses only to send them to nursing homes the likes of east bay nursing homes. Growth? Not really. If some people view growth only in financial terms, they are more superficial than I’d first thought.
PPPS: Since I get a lot of hits looking for the song’s lyrics, I’ll bite. Buklod and Bamboo’s versions are not really very different, but I’ll post here the former’s version since I’m more familiar with it.
Habang may tatsulok

- And that’s coming from someone who despises revivals, hence, despises both MYMP and Nina. [↩]
- I find it ironic that as someone who detests copyright infringement, I can listen to or even download a song in Multiply, hehe. [↩]
- It distorted the true meaning of the song, which is about the environment - duh? [↩]
- Of which Noel Cabangon was once a member. [↩]
- Evidently, I’m not a fan of these bands. They make me sick. [↩]
the title sounds familiar, but i dont know if ive heard of this song before. lemme listen to it. i bet im gonna like it.. lalo na ngayon puro bamboo pinapakinggan ko.
balik yung OPM interests ko. hehe.
bakit ako hindi ko alam yan?? >_
nakkainspire talaga un mga ganon noh sis?
Hmm, that triangle thingy for the socio-political side of Phllippines does sound right, even though I don’t live there… From what I’ve heard about countries like the Philippines, it sounds about right… =/
wow, TATSULOK!
I must admit, I didn’t understand one word of that. lol
Uy, ang galing nun ah. Ang interesting nmn nung idea behind the “Tatsulok”. Unfortunately, i haven’t heard this song yet..
thanks for the link. I loved kanlungan.. ididiscover ko na ang band na to
any more stirring bands to recommend?
and there has got to be a better shape out there (like a line..) and a better alternative to capitalism..
okay, sorry for mistaking ‘Buklod’ for a radical band.. I still want to look up good activist songs though
Nina: I bet you’re going to like it.
Monalisa: Nyaiks! Hindi ko alam! Haha! But you’re missing half of your life. *winks*
Aisha: Hmm…Yeah….
Chau: It is, believe me.
Noreen: You know the song?
Corinne: Hehe, I kind of expected that.
*kutos* Haha! Listen.
Ann: Grabe noh? Tangna talaga! Mas maganda yung original, mas mafi-feel mo talaga (mas maganda kasi yung music - flute and all) pero sabi nga ni Nato Reyes, medyo nadali ni Bamboo ang subdued anger ng voice ni Noel Cabangon while singing the song. Actually, mas galit talaga yung original song. Nakaka-agit! But if you ask me, Bamboo did an excellent job in its revision. Sabi ko nga, Bamboo’s currently my most favorite Pinoy band. Astig! \m/
Bands? Yeah, love songs. Pero astig, haha!
Hmm, Armas has very nice songs, kaso halatang sobrang luma na. Bong Ramilo, one of the founding members of TABAK, has written lots of progressive songs na mabenta rin sa hanay ng mga tibak.
Gary Granada and Joey Ayala. Tsaka ang Juan dela Cruz band! Haha! Well, medyo.
// You know what our answer is to capitalism….
//
I didn’t understand much of it, but I did understand the triangle part.
It’s something most people that aren’t in a country like The Philippines are aware of, but it seems that the population of the country itself is not aware of if.
It will probably be very hard to make a change; the once that have the power now won’t let it go so easily, but something needs to be done. And creating awareness through music is a good start. Eyes might open and things might change, even if it’s just a little.
That BLOODY song is cool!:)
Really knocks some sense to you huh?:P
I’m not really familiar with the band or the song,=P SORRY NA…but I’d listen to it sometime.:)
Ayos!
bands like cueshe and hail makes me hate OPM more. i refuse to listen to “orig” pinoy music, kasi we always copy whats popular. except reggae bands. I love filipino reggae bands. bigla nalang sila sumikat maski wala sa international scene ang reggae.
I KNEW THAT WAS FROM BAMBOO. I heard it on the radio on the way to school a few days ago, and for someone who doesn’t like OPM music, I actually liked it. The lyrics were just so… wow.
Ooh! That makes me excited for Bamboo’s upcoming album. ^^
To be honest, I’m not a big fan of OPM and Bamboo is okay.
i don’t know buklod. di pa siguro ako buhay nung mga panahong yun XD
You got the bulls eye of that bloody song. I like that song as well…
Oh and I don’t like Hell and Cueshit either. I also don’t like spongebobcola, sugarfreak, sexcycleminds and shamerock… they bloody $&^#.
waah. ang astig. to the Nth level. ^^
i just wish Filipino people will heed to the call.. but in all honesty i am very saddened with how our youth acts nowadays. If these youth will be the “future of our country” then id be very afraid of what future future my children-to-be will have …
I heard the song today at Jam88.3 and I must say, I LOVE it. The song gives out a clear message, a good one. I hope the people will listen to it.
well well well, i never bloody thought youre bloody brit! lol
It’s a great song with an equally great message behind it. If only the triangle could successfully be inverted.
if you can all give indie opm bands a chance, marami kayong maririnig na magagaling. minsan overrated ang bamboo, pero what can i say, magaling talaga sila.
ahh so this is where the action is about tatsulok.

peace out!
its so much realistic situation now adays!
I was and still is a fan of Buklod. And bamboo added a touch of acceptability to the song. Bamboo’s remake made the song more acceptable to the used to be ‘biased’ to progressive songs such as Tatsulok.
This breakthrough created a refreshing ambience to the old ‘alternative and rock and roll’ concept of death, lust and wasted gen-ex.
Hola!
I don’t care who sing the song, the important thing is the people who listens to it realizes and put the message in action..Lets all be strong in fighting for EQUALITY..

sir, whoever you are.. who made this blog… i think you over reacted.. in the song, yes i know how you felt about our country, about our goverment, but it is not right to point the faults to our goverment and curse their families, i don’t also agreed in the things that had happened here in our country, but don’t be one sided person… ok
Response to 4105:
If you can just use either straight English or straight Filipino, I’m sure I’d be able to understand you clearly. Ang labo eh. But anyway, I fail to see why I have over-reacted. I have not “curse[d] their families” (whose families?). Geesh. Sorry to disagree with you, pero where would disagreeing lead you? Nowhere. So sorry, I happen to like what I do. I’m not gonna be a passive citizen of this country. And just for the record, my friends and I have been abused by the police during our immersion days. Maybe you don’t know the feeling.
bloody lyrics…
So where’s the “cursing” in that?
At excuse me po, but you’re taking the issue out of the context. The point here is that the song is very timely dahil sa mga nangyayari sa lipunan natin.
Response to 4134:
I see.. talaga palang galit ka…
at kailangang sundin….
I have check the box which will enable an automatic update on my email about this blog…So I was monitoring this the whole time.
This particular exchange of thoughts made me want to participate in a way I think is proper. It isn’t necessary to use a particular medium/language/linggo whatever to be able to express emotions, objective or subjective, whatever.
Type 1:
But, a person, of course possess the freedom to express his own opinion, provided that nobody’s personal/private interest will be violated in the process.
Type 2:
Vague, ambigous. What is so hard to define here is…where should we draw the line, who says this is proper who says it is not.
Type 3:
The question/suggestion of one-sidedness…Of course we must take side. But we must take sides only if we have fully determines what we think is right and just. If we don’t take sides we will be caught in the middle, useless. We may vanish in this earth as pathetic bystanders. If by any bad luck, we may be caught in the crossfire because we are too stupid not to duck when a firefight is at bay.
Type 4:
One very ‘golden’ contribution of the bible to the human race is the ‘golden rule’. Do not do unto others what you do not want others to do unto you.’ or was it ‘ do unto others what you want others to do unto you.’
If we fail to understand it fully we are failure as human beings because violation of this rule is inhuman. No more, no less. And in violation of this golden rule, comes oppression, repression..etc. etc.
and as always, we only issue respect to anybody who deserves it. As for comments about how we must pay our homage to thw present administration…shouldn’t we think twice about how deadly that might be? Paying our respect to a group of people claiming that they are for the people the are supposed to serve, yet does only service to themselves…worst…illiminating whoever crosses their path.
And as to who wants the ‘tatsulok’ reversed…there will always be a continuing struggle between the oppress and the oppressor..it is natural law my dear. Even sea anemones struggle for food and survival. Of course the oppressed is called the oppressed because their rights are being violated by their oppressor. As to what is indicated in the song, race, color and religion is no longer the issue, it is already about who have it all and to whom did they take it from?
Elementary, dear Faith, majority of this country’s population strive. They are not lazy as is, it is because society upholds competition, and how could an street educated, no school diploma, squatter’s ares dwelling, pathetic, ‘istambay’ compete with somebody who drives a ferarri, sprays givenchi, designer jeans wearing, harvard degree holder. Say…now who wants not to turn his faith around.
Problem is …if I am on top…what now? Back to the Golden rule my dear…all these chaos will end if we apply the Golden rule. Embrace it…but first let us tun this tatsulok thing upside-down first…and start a fresh outlook of life. No poverty, one works for the betterment of society not just one’s self.
When that time comes, who needs a ferrari when we have a very convenient mass transport system, who would save a lot of money in his vault when food and shelter is available and medical and educational welfare is magnificent….hahaha…Utopia, nirvan,,,but hey…isn’t it a dream worth dreaming at night?
Sayang talaga ang talino ng babaeng yan,,,kaso as what the late Max Soliven said on one of his last writings was..not verbatim ok…I am not really blessed with an exceptional memory…”We must be understanding enough to understand President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, a princess, so she really isn’t aware what poverty is and how it is like to be poor.”
So my dear, only those who suffered, oppressed and beaten up by the system would fully understand the noble undertaking of turning this ‘tatsulok’ upside-down.
I hope I made my point clear.
That being said, we deserve our current government, masakit mang isipin. Bakit?
We really need to take sides. Sabi nga, apathy is the oppressors’ best friend. Nakakalungkot.
