Finally, Period. And Chicken Inasal
Maybe it’s the beer that did me in.
Thursday was pretty eventful than usual. Power went out at around 4:30PM while I was returning comments from my previous posts. I almost kicked the computer with frustration. I was feeling like being a good commenter that time, but Meralco just had to spoil the mood. I told my brother to call them and find out what was going on. Three hours later, they still came up with the lame-o answer, “We still don’t know what caused the outage, but rest assured that we’re doing everything we can to fix the problem.”
Fine. Whatever. I’m nice naman eh. Just wondering why our street was the only dark one in the area. Yeah, only our street.
We went out a couple of minutes after my mom arrived and met with my father in Mindanao Avenue. Dad said he knows this place owned by a famous and one of the best actors in the country, Joel Torre.
JT’s Manukan Grille
Found somewhere near ABS-CBN in Sgt. Esguerra, JT’s Manukan Grille is a modest curbside restaurant that offers simply the best chicken inasal I’ve ever tasted. Joel Torre and his men must have scoured the whole of Bacolod to look for the most delicious inasal recipe. The price does not disappoint either; everything is relatively cheap, given the generous amount of serving which can only mean one thing: the chickens must have been really big.
Out waiter took our orders promptly. There was a slight problem though. We wanted pecho (chicken breast with wings) but it’s “ubos na“, along with the calamansi juice that I craved. We had 2 paa (chicken leg and thigh), 3 baticulon (chicken gizzard), and 1 atay (chicken liver) instead. I decided to accompany the delicious meal with a bottle of beer. My dad got jealous after he saw my drink and ordered one for himself as well. Garlic rice, which was (I assume) cooked in Star Margarine and topped with a lot of garlic bits, was cheaper than in most restaurants. I forgot what it’s called, but the vinegar was goooood.
The bill reached a little over P500. Not bad at all. Except that they billed us P30 short because they forgot to include one drink. We had to tell our waiter about it. Turns out that it’s not even a first; every time my dad eats there, that always happens. If all JT’s Manukan Grille crews are as careless as the ones who served us, Joel Torre’s not gonna remain in business any longer.

My period has arrived!
Finally, after xxx years, my red visitor has come once again. I’m convinced that once I start thinking about it, it comes. I’ve just complained about it a couple of days ago in one of my Twitter twits. I got my first when I was a high school freshman. My second when I was in sophomore. My third when I was a junior. Are you getting the picture yet?
I once had to take in meds prescribed by the doctor, but I stopped because they were too damn expensive (I’m allergic to anything expensive). And there were a few times when I had to wear adult diapers just to keep up with all the blood I was losing. Imagine that, haha.
Horrible dysmenorrhea. This means I won’t be able to get up easily for a couple of days — but I have laundrywork to do.
My mom’s gone for the weekend so I can’t pass my chore on to her. It takes me around 3-4 days to look and feel close-to-normal again. I really should consult a doctor again about my problem.
Expect me gone for at least 2 days. I’m now starting to feel all wobbly and maarte. Just text me if you need something, those who know my number.
Hay, dammit, alak pa nga!
Congrats on the visitor. Hahaha sana mag tuloy tuloy na yan, as in every month.
:P Anudaw.
Ay, and hot water bottles help for dysmenorrhea.
Well, for me. And walking. But it’s so nice to be stuck on a chair and do nothing whenever I have my period. Hehe.
I usually walk around when i have dysmenorrhea. Just like keep moving haha because it’s horrid. Reading your blog made me really hungry haha. I was already hungry but now I feel like hopping on a plane and going to that restaurant.
I think you should have a follow-up consult with your gynecologist. You’d have to fix that problem up if you want to have kids someday. Hehe. But seriously, I think you should go back to your doc. It’s not good if you’re menstruating that heavily. It could be not just a simple gynecologic problem. I don’t want to scare you but I’ve a friend who had the same problem as yours. After a thorough work-up, turned out that she had leukemia.
I cannot comment about your red visitor (oh I wish I have mine. Lol :-p). In any case, even if it’s allergically expensive, might as well have it checked by someone who knows better. Hey, did I just comment about your monthly period problem?
Blah. I’m just wasted.
BTW, I’ve learned about Joel Torre’s chicken inasal grill on TV (forgot about the show, darn my short term memory loss) and he was like bragging about that root crop (ginger-like, it’s Ilonggo, darn my short term memory loss again) which he use for the marinade.
Argh, I hate my short term memory loss. I’d better go and buy some Memo Gold… argh, darn my short term memory loss again
@Tina - Asa pa ako. Hehe.
And oh, I do sit-ups. Wow. Papayat ako haha!
@Angie - True, horrid. Horrible. Blah.
@Doc Tess - I know. Actually, it’s one of the reasons why parang everyone’s apprehensive of me consulting the doctor again: both my mom and grandmom were diagnosed with cervical cancer, so….
Haha.
Dysmenorrhea sounds awful. I used to suffer from horrible cramps as well. I find that staying away from sugary drinks, such as pops helps ease the pain. Standing still or sitting down doesn’t exactly ease the pain (especially while working), so what helps me is getting up, and moving around.
Ah. That “Adult diapers”, aka “Maxi Pads”. I wear those at night, while I’m sleeping, and “Plug it up” (tampons) during the day. I was a maxi pad user for several years, and last year moved over to tampons, after finally learning how to “insert”. I was always scared to try at first.
“Tampax Pearls” work wonders. Those are what I use. However, I’m unsure if they have those in the Phillipines.
Wow. A whole comment about “Aunt Flow”. Pretty funny, considering that I’m still waiting for mine. It’s over a week late again!! I’ve skipped 3 months in a row earlier this year, got it on time for 2 months, and now it’s acting up again. Weight loss may be the trigger.
Uy shems u got me all hungry ah! At nakakainis din kasi you get to buy beer and such with out getting asked for an ID. Nakakinis!!!! Oh well.. =] hmm..
period period period… *thinking about it hoping my visitor would come one of these days* lol. i haven’t gotten my period for about 2 months now… but this morning i woke up with the worst cramps ever.. and recently, i’ve been getting pimples here and there around my face and that usually means im about to have my period (cuz i rarely get pimples for the longest time). anyway,, cramps sucks seriously!
*iinom nalang din ako later*
I hate it when the power goes out. It really sucks. Yummm i love chicken its really yummy! I would not have told trhem about the shortage  Thats kind of you though.

we ate at the original JT’s somewhere past greenhills and were lucky enough to be served by JT himself. chinichika siya ng mga officemates ko who had been there before. cool
I hate it when your ‘dot’ (as I call it) doesn’t come for forever, than and FINALLY, and then you realize what a pain-in-the-ass it is. And I love power outages
LOL about your power going out. I’d HATE that if it happened! Though I do have a laptop, but then I won’t have internet!!! LOL…
Yum, food… I’m hungry!! LOL…
Wow, you get your period that often?!! CRAZY!!! But it’s weird also… =/ LOL…
Oh my.. you are making me jealous! Well if ever I get back to the Phils. I will surely feast on inasal or lechon manok!
Chicken inasal. Yum!
Oh goodness!! I’m glad that you’ve got your period!
I always freak out when I don’t have my period… it could be next possibly scariest thing!
Oooh… you have such good food reviews. It makes me want to go and try some really good food… but I wish I had a guide ^-^
nako naalala ko nun times na irreg ako.. there were times i was like that but it seems like yearly sau skn bgla bgla umaatake soo maswerte kana dun.. pero ok pdn ang regular soo why not try na pacheckup.. nkooo. hindinmn cguru gnun kamahal un
I also love JT’s… they’re yummy and inexpensive. Made me crave for chicken inasal.
Hahaha that’s odd! when we ate at Chicken Inasal in Pioneer before, they also forgot to include the drink. It was around 20+ pesos (it was an Ice tea by the way).
hay ako wala pa. i’ll start to think nga like that book SECRET says. if you think of it happening, more likely it will.
bleh.
PS.. power in baguio also was out FOR THE WHOLE FREAKING DAY yesterday! it came back on mga 9:30pm na siguro. ang OA di ba.
hey shari,
i think you should go have a gynecologist take a look at you. i have an orgmate who had the same problem as you and she had to undergo surgery to correct the problem. although she did try contraceptive pills to balance her hormones, it still did not quite work for her. she now tells all her girl friends to have regular check-ups with a gyne just to be sure.
This is strange to some, but doctors often prescribe birth control pills to regulate the menstrual cycle. It’s all because of hormonal imbalance.
Congrats on the visitor … [:
And the chicken on the menu looked good!
Damn this entry made me so hungry! Bad Shari, bad!
Congrats on your period. Hehe! Maybe you should continue seeing an OB-Gyne; you could have a hard time having babies in the future.
Haha. Do you even want to have babies?
chicken inasal! I like that food. kaso sa mall na lagi naming pinupuntahan (Alabang Town Center) wala masyadong filipino food. ayala mall kasi. ang meron sa ATC na masarap (at mura) na pinoy food eh yung Ineng’s. super mura talaga. kaso we don’t get to eat there a lot.
wow. your first was when you’re a freshman. first ko 2nd grade.
Wow. That’s pretty unusual. Hmmm. When I had my first period, it had been regular eversince. And dysmenorrhea’s not bothering me much.
Hmmm. Yeah, maybe consult your doctor again.
I love Chicken Inasal.
On the very infrequent visitor. I have a friend who has the same symptoms. You should really schedule an appointment with a doctor.
In times like that, the power generator is your friend! Good thing we have one of those here!
Chicken Inasal? Eew! My apologies for my taste buds are kinda picky.
Hail women everywhere for enduring your painful dysmenorrhea every month!
naku nag enjoy ka sa inasal! ahha madala nga kita sa amin sa bacolod. i brought my officemates there last year nung masskara festival.
its not star margarine. its chicken fat (read: CHOLESTEROL) ahehe cooked with atsuete seeds.
thats how we ilonggos eat inasal , nilalagyang ng mantika ang kanin tapos konting asin.
Power went out? I thought that only happened regularly on Guam! haha
Haha.
suka = sinamak.
red visitors are always celebrated with hurrahs when couples are agitated because of the delays. lol.
notice the bar beside JT’s? Nineteen20 bar. that’s where i hangout. cheap beer great food. try the kropek, nachos, pinaputok na plapla.yum!
Hurray for your period! LOL
I do remember my girlfriend dumping me when we had a breakfast conversation. Then we got ‘in’ once again at night. That’s due to that horrible red visitor.
Horrible coz it causes mood swings. Arrrrgh.
I guess there are times when I’d rather not have my period, but I guess in the long run its better to have it.
I’m glad your “visitor” came!
beer helps with the dismenorrhea.
waw. siyempre, i spelled it wrong. dysmenorrhea. haha, parang di bio. shet.
I haven’t had breakfast yet… Now I want chicken inasal! (which I’ve never tried in my life but always wanted to) @_@ I can’t believe my friends and I never discovered that place while we were still in ABS-CBN for our practicum…
I *must* drag my dad over to that place one of these days. hihi.
Gaaah… You really should consult a doctor… One of my closest friends in college used to bleed a LOT while one of our other classmates only got her period once or twice a year.
(But I’m one to talk! Yesterday was my first trip to the man with a white coat in 5 years! And it wasn’t even for a general check-up. I *had* to go because of the I.D. thingy.)
oh, the chicken inasal. how i miss that. i am a Bacolodnon so I know how good it tastes! hey, that’s a thought. maybe I can put up my own chicken inasal resto here in Oz. Darliiiingg!!!!! (imagine my hubby saying yes dear and hurrying towards me)
i used to have severe dysmenorrhea too. hot water bottles does help, but when I’m out, I’d have a bottle of un-chilled beer instead. for a very long time, beer was my bestfriend during my period. later, i resorted to taking contrceptives to regulate my period and from the on, period pain is pain no more
see a specialist. it’s not good NOT having your period for a long period of time
when i read the title, i thought “wtf?!” is it a good thing to mix that period with a food. LOL. anyways just the crazy me. good thing it was two different topics.
Kinda abnormal nga. Hmmm… I used to have them every month nung 2nd year highschool ako. Grabe sobrang sakit. It even came to the point that I have too takie in Mefenamic acid kasi wa effect yung water bag. Buti nalang, it’s rare na. Iron deficiency ata nagsisimula yun. Kasi I remember my mom saying to me that I have to watch out for my iron especially kapag meron ako. Kaya yun , I use night pads on every first day of the period.
Hindi ko alam ang Chicken inasal. Pinikpikan, oo…at nakita ko pa kung paano iprepare…Killing me softly…Hehe
Mga once a year lang nagkakadysme. I’m a lucky f*ck e haha. Those special exercises and ponstan lang katapat nung akin.
I read Dra.Tess’ comment and your reply.. syempre ako rin natakot. XP Patingin ka na…
You want the best chicken inasal? Go to Bacolod. Although I haven’t tried the ones at JT’s, most of the restaurants in Manila that try to sell inasal can’t get the true taste of Bacolod style inasal. Heck, they couldn’t even beat the inasal that this guys sells in a corner near our house in Bacolod.
Eric mentioned about the yellow thing you put on the rice, for the sawsawan, you need good vinegar and the best is what we call “sinamak” mixed with a little bit of soy sauce and some chili. The best! Oh man, this is making me drool and miss inasal more. :P
hehe nice one shari. im gonna check that JTs Grill one time. Mukhang ok ang “service” dyan ah! hehe. No comment about the period. Abnormal ba un?
Tsk, tsk. Worried about pregnancy? :P
Not sure what’s best. Get it as seldom as you and alot or getting it every month and still… quite alot?
Hmm ^^ But yeah you should see a doctor again!
at first when i read your twitt, you got me worried about all this bleeding. not that i am a doctor, but it seems there is some hormonal imbalance somewhere, that is why you didn’t have your period earlier.
one of my daughters who had hormonal imbalance and who is now cured, has lost a lot of weight as soon as her hormones balanced off.
one of these days, you have to tell your doctor about this.
all of that chicken talk is making me wish i had enjoyed my lunch a little more. stupid boys! whoa! you get your period with so much gap? or did i misunderstand what you just said. thats insane, if its true. hope you have spoken to a doc about it. and i really hope you feel better soon!
I hate my visitor. It’s never definite, and is always accompanied by a side order of cramps and whatnots.
Yeah, I guess you should go see your doctor again, just to make sure.. :-s
Oooh. Chicken Inasal, miss ko na yan! Joel Torre is from my hometown and happens to be the uncle of my best friend. It’s good to know he’s promoting Bacolod’s specialty!
Naku, oonga, hormonal imbalance yan of some sort. Magpatingin ka na as early as now.
Wow sis, that’s really weird. Masyadong delayed and mens mo? have you consulted a doctor na ba? Well, I hope you do na.
I didn’t know that Joel Torre owns a resto. I’ve eating Inasal before and it really tastes good.
Sorry about the period troubles, it’d probably be smart to consult a doctor about it again.
That chicken sounds good… especially how you intricately described it with such VIVID WORDS
A period?? I thought you were supposed to have them once a month?? DON’T CONFUSE ME SHARI! I know my facts
Naku. Ganyan din ako. Super irregular. Nakakaasar. “comatose” ako kapag may mens eh. Asar. Pacheck up ka nga uli.
wow. i actually wanna go there too. ive seen that JT’smanukan grille in TV (abas, i think) and the chicken really made me hungry.
I hate getting my period. My first day is always a pain. Why must girls suffer like that?
Are you saying you have irregular period? Well. uhm, me too!
Haha. I hate Meralco too. Lately, we had 1-second brow-outs. I hate it especially when I’m playing Pokemon in my Gameboy Emulator. Good luck with your dysmenorrhea.
just when you feeling like giving comments the power acts up. tsk.. tsk
so far di ko pa na experience mga extreme pains while having the pms. only the urge of wanting to poo on the first day. eewww..
waaah.. nakakagutom tong post mo.. i want to eat there na tuloy.
grabe.. once a year lang ikaw magkaron? minsan gusto ko nian. HAHAHA!!!
Whoa Shari will be gone for 2 days. haha. You make me crave with all the inasal and chicken dish… I guess it’s good to be in legal age coz you can drink alcohol even though you’re with your parents. And oh, thanks to the beer. hehe
Hope you feel better soon!
Ay naku, story of my life (hormones, not chicken inasal — unfortunately). What finally helped was The Pill. After I started taking it, my periods became lighter, regular, and with no more accompanying pain/discomfort/cramping. I suppose I don’t need to mention the added benefit, too.
Plus if anyone raises an eyebrow about your taking it, you can say it was prescribed by your doctor for medical reasons and actually be telling the truth (not that anyone has a right to make pakialam, but that’s a different topic altogether)? But like so many people have suggested, see your gyn first (and DON’T listen to anyone who says you don’t have to if you’ve never had sex or you’re not sexually active — that’s just a bunch of hooey).
Hrm, I don’t really have any problems with my period, but a friend of mine had hers like, only twice a year once =/. She looked fine, but I dunno. I guess you should see your doctor, but I always find using a hot water bottle at night and drinking green tea helps. But, then again, I’m a natural remedies sort of person :). I hope you feel better soon!
Hi Shari. I heard of that place but I’ve never been there before. It’s been a while since I last had chicken anasal.
Hope you’re feeling better now. Take care!
Aha, I LOVE chicken.
Last time I ordered somewhere they forgot to bill me for my dessert and drink so I only ended up paying around $15 dollars for something that would usually cost me $30.
congratz on the monthly visitor! maybe you should check with the doctor? diba masama yan mag hindi regular?
Have you tried consulting your gyne…. or are you in contraceptives? (joke)
Yay, chicken! I heartheartheart chicken. And wow, you can drink beer with your folks around? I cant
As for your period: Ive always complained about my monthly visitor (which never fails to visit on the third weekend of every month). My friend, Klassy, is the same as you. I know she gets her period thrice a year? I dont know if thats still the case til today, though.
I’m familiar with that place! We used to eat there! Food really is delicious and really cheap.
Finally! Living in the South of the Metro pays off! No power delay!
Up to now your period is still irregular? You’re already 19 and according to what we study, it should be regular by now.
I do not mean to be rude but I laughed my ass off when you talked about the adult diapers. Are really serious?!
I crave for that Chicken Inasal! Anyway, it’s my first time reading you blog. And it’s great!! I loooove the content.
I will only commnt on the food stuff ! ;-)
Sounds very yummy … and unexpensive!
Well, I wish I was you right now. Yearly periods sound soooo liberating! Even though, yeah, you might need to get a check-up for it. :P
I get cramps a lot too. Just keep yourself warm and you can take ibuprofen if it becomes unbearable.
Woah, you only get your period once a year? You’re so lucky. But I bet it’s pretty awful when your red week finally comes… or is it red month for you? LOL.
The last power out we had was about four years ago. Like you it only affected our street but even more strangly, it only affected every even house. So we had no electricity, freezing our butts off (it was in winter) as we were relying on electric heaters, whilst our neighbours sat snug… and didn’t even invite us into their homes!
I finally had the time to comment here again. Anyways.
Meralco is always like that, especially when there’s an unexplainable power outage in our subdivision, they refuse to answer our telephone calls.
Just messing around. I have a classmate like you whose period arrives only once in every six months. That friend of mine scares me everytime she worries that her ’suitor’ is not visiting her yet. *shudders*
Oh the woe. I’m allergic to expensive things too, unless it’s something that I’ve been wanting to use for ’school’ and ‘writing’ purposes.
argh, period. am waiting mine. takot ako kpag delayed :d
Your symptoms sound like that of polycystic ovarian syndrome’s. Is it? I have it kasi. The best thing is to have it treated as early as possible, especially if you want to be a mom in the future.
Oh, I hate getting my period! I think I’m about to really soon because my chest has been breaking out
Oooh… you should talk to your doctor if your period has been irregular after all these years… I almost had to take contraceptive pills to make my period come regularly. My doctor said it had to do with my hormones and that I probably needed more estrogen in my body. But after she told me that, I started getting it regularly so I didn’t need to take any
Buti hindi nila naisip na preggy ka since nung time na nagstop ka. hehehehe. Keep the juice coming, happy period!
I had been into that JT’s Manukan Grille several times already. I agree with you - price is considerable and service is good…
Hi Ate Shari!! Weee! You know, your street isn’t the only one suffering from those Meralco probs! How many times has our street been left in the dark too.. GRRR! Oh well. hehe. And yep, JT’s chicken inasal is DA BEST! Haha we often eat there, well not often, around once every 2 months. JT and the waiters we’ve met there are really friendly! hehe My mom even had their office party there! Cool! hehe. Man, maybe you should go check again ate about your visitor because it’s really different to be having periods once a year. I don’t think it’s hjealthy.. but glad that it came! Cramps suck though! Ugh, they are the most horrible things that occur in a girl’s life! hahhaa. Well tc now!
Hmmm… Ayos, musta naman si red visitor?
Awww, sabay pala tayo *lmao
Anyways, I’m now starting to count. Sige, i’ll text you (as if I know your #) Haha!
I’ve missed a lot in here, huh. Bawi ako sa next entry mo.
It is always annoying when the power goes out. Ours rarely does, but sadly it’s the only time I really relax at home. No computer, no tv. It’s a good time to spend reading or doing a puzzle or something…but them I’m a bit of a dork and love doing that. But the computer is so distracting!
I love good food!!
haha, what a coincidence, i definitely had chicken inasal yesterday! granted, it was my dad who made it and half the skin was burnt on the breast, haha. masarap anyway.
i’m glad you got your period again, though it must be so aggravating having it once a year. i’d be so annoyed. XD
i grew up in bacolod, i never got tired of it. i met JT when I went home last February. He’s a funny dude, kept teasing me and my boyfriend if we’re gonna get married. but i know he’ll never remember me ever again.
about your period, what a coincidence, i just collected telephone numbers of OBGYNs coz mine is also weird.
aww. once every year lang ang dalaw mo?? hala.. you should really consult your doctor again.. hay dysmenorrhea.. parehas tayo super sama din ng day ko pag meron.. lagi pa kong nagsusuka, nagdadiarrhea at nanlalata pag unang araw..
I don’t think it was beer that did that to you. I’m also irregular and once didn’t have my period for 4 months straight! People even started to think I might be pregnant or something. :!: :?: Thankfully, it came after… unfortunately it did with its little friend named Dysmenorrhea who became such a big pain for me for the next several days. lol~
Nice, really?! I went to eat at Chicken Inasal yesterday with my mom naman sa SM North Edsa. Hehe.
Anyway, as for your period—-it’s nice that you have it back! Haha. That situation about the you-need-to-wear-adult-diapers is quite humorous in my side. As for yours, it’d be an oops-moment.
You should get that strangeness about your period checked out. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t get it done.
That food looks yummy! My husband is a sucker for chicken
A yearly visitor??
Mine’s pretty irregular too… But not yearly. You should consult your doctor.
Oh and thanks a lot for the vote!! Much appreciated.
I found a Filipino American cookbook recently (actually, it seems to be the only one in the market)… and it’s done very well. There’s a fusion recipe in there for Chicken Inasal. Uses ginger and lemons (instead of lemongrass) and paprika instead of atsuete oil… I though I’d try it out, since your entry inspired me. There must be a story in there somewhere… You know, “fusion” of 2 ethnic cultures, blah blah.
I’m so glad I can eat… chicken again.
Umm, you got your period… oookay. Whatdoyawantmetosay? Hallelujah, praise the Lord? Amen. LOL.
L8tr days.
I texted you a couple of times already and yet you haven’t replied
what’s up with that? you OK?
I can’t believe you told the waiter that you owed more than you were billed. I would have been like, woohoo! Saving money!
Wow, your period sounds horrible. I hope with time it works itself out so you don’t have to deal with that maddness anymore.
You should get tested for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome… or get on birthcontrol. that’s inexpensive and will help regulate hormones.
wow, your periods are horrible! how can you put up with that?
/despair.nu
i would just like to ask, i got a 27 day menstrual cycle, i had sex 3-4 days after my menstruation, will i be able to get pregnant. thnx!
Kain ka nalang Bacolod Chicken Inasal.
Haha! You’re kinda right about that Jim. Let’s go BCI instead.
I heard about that bacolod chicken inasal on a radio advertisement.
