Ateneo is Now Philippines’ Top University

That is, according to the latest study by Times Higher Education Supplement and QS Top Universities.

It just might be that Ateneo de Manila University has claimed 2008 to be its year, after grabbing the championship for the men’s basketball in the recently concluded University Athletic Association of the Philippines.

Ateneo ranks 254th, while long-time numero uno state/national university University of the Philippines is at 276th. De La Salle University and University of Santo Tomas are somewhere on the 400+th place.

Ateneo and UP also made it to the top 100 universities in Arts and Humanities; Ateneo is 79th, while UP is 82nd.

Both also figured in the top 100 in Employer Review: Ateneo is 76th, and UP is 82nd. They’re joined in by La Salle, which is in the 92nd spot.

So…does that mean I can no longer say that I used to study in the number one school in the Philippines? But then, apparently, UP doesn’t take the rankings seriously.

Philippine Universities Drop Ranks; UP Now 398th

Last year, University of the Philippines barely managed to grab a spot in the Top 300 universities in the world according to a study conducted by Times Higher Education Supplement and QS Top Universities.

  • 299 - University of the Philippines
  • 392 - De La Salle University
  • 484 - Ateneo de Manila University
  • 500 - University of Santo Tomas

Although I’m not exactly very fond of ranking anything, I’m still disappointed in this year’s world ranking result, released early this month.

University of the Philippines drops from 299 to 398 (scroll down to the bottom). Ateneo now outranks La Salle as it moves 33 steps forward, taking the 451st spot and pushing the latter to 519th. UST gets the 535th slot in the ranking.

Ahhh, bullshit! There are so many far more important things that need to be done than worry about numbers and rankings. Yes?
