UP, 299th Top University

According to TopUniversities.com, one of the 299th top universities in the world, and the numero uno in the Philippines, is University of the Philippines. So, fellow Isko and Iska, are we happy and proud about this?

I suppose we should be. We are UP students after all. But we shouldn’t be contented with this; we should strive harder for a higher quality of education - the quality education which is being deprived of us by the government as it continuously decreases the budget for education every year. Fight for greater state subsidy!

Anyway, universities have been weighed on the following criteria:

  • Research quality
  • Graduate employability
  • International outlook
  • Teaching quality

And these are other Philippine universities that made it to the Top 520:

Not bad, or too bad?

Wow, that’s awesome about the university! I should check mine’s… Hehe…

  2. Sandra

ey there! wow.. congrats for up! and for the other univeristies that got in the topuniversities!! woah.. that’s not bad.,. it’s great!^_^

  3. isley

ok din na makapasok sa top universities.. but we shouldnt be contented sa ganung place nalang!! haha go philippine educ!!! =D

  4. Aja

It’s bad. But, still I’m happy my university hanged on to 500th.

Hmm, I just think their stats could a little bit be inaccurate. In recent Varsitarian news, UST is second (in the Philippines) to DLSU in terms of the number of international students—not fourth according to TopUniversities.com. ;)

  5. Aja

Oops, make that third according to TopUniversities.com. Sorry. :D

And I could really tell that we don’t currently have just 47 int’l students. Look around our campus. ;)

  6. Frances

And only US and the Philippines have private schools on the list. The rest are STATE UNIVERSITIES.

  7. jonar

Actually, it’s not topuniversities.com that made the study, but the Times Higher Education Supplement.

  8. Talamasca

Whoa! 392! Animo La Salle! :-)

Harvard’s on top of the list… Why of course, of course! Pffft!

Anyway, yeah, I agree about the subsidy. If it weren’t for those people who manipulate slash hoard educational funds and those people who’re still sour graping because of the fact that they didn’t pass the UPCAT *cough* Sec. Gonzales *cough*, UP would’ve soared much higher.

    Disgusting, really.

  9. Carla

Ooh. ^^

  10. Shari

Aja: Cool. Inaccurate nga eh, haha! But then, may percentages din kasi yan. Boo. Whose standards, I want to know.

Frances: That tells us something, right? ^_^

Jonar: That’s why I mentioned the web site where the ranking list is found. Moreover, from what I’ve read, Top Universities is a collaboration of THES and QS.

Talamasca: Yeah, of course. Harvard. ^_^ And what can I say more? True, true, Niño. =)

  11. Lindsey

That’s some pretty interesting information. :) I’m not surprised at how high the rank of UP is. It would be really cool, though, if the rank gets higher :D.

  12. aichee

dannnggg one of the top 299 in the world .. hmmm .. not too bad for a third world country .. hehe .. its alright i guess? but yay to that! :)

  13. michelle

Yes! You all can do it. Raise the standards! :P when i saw “Harvard University” and “University of Cambridge” as top 2, i went “doh~” =/ as always lol.

  14. Euri

UP being a top university at the Philippines is kind of not surprizing. It’s like a university collecting brilliant minds. >.

  15. Shari

    Euri: Ouch! :p

  16. christian

it’s not bad at all… pwedeng pwede nga e! but then, i think, if the government would focus their attention to education, i’m sure, UP and the other schools here in the country can achieve a higher rank!

teka, bakit wala yung univer na pinapasukan ko jan sa list? baka pang 521st haha… lol. but from what i’ve heard it’s included in the top 20universities in the country.

  17. ems

hmmm.. next time (and not too far from today haha!), DLSU will be number #1

    hehehehe…

    *peace*

hmmm i beg to disagree.. hehehe.. peace tayo.. all schools have their own “black sheep”

i remember sa previous company ko, sankatutak ang mga galing UP, UP Diliman pa, saksakan ng kaartehan, pasaway at *ehem, excuse me* hindi ako nagagalingan sa kanila. Okay pa yun galing ng UP Los Banos.

    Peace tayo ha…

392nd place … I guess not bad at all.

btw shari thanks for allowing me to quote and/or post your writings!! cool! ;)

  22. Shari

    Christian: Hehe who knows? :p

Ate Ems: What Euri has said is that UP is like a university collecting brilliant minds. She didn’t say that it’s the only university collecting brilliant minds, nor that all students there have brilliant minds. Sorry but I feel the need to defend her stand on this issue. Maybe for some people their school is number one, but I guess no one could really argue the fact (with valid and factual arguments and reasoning backing them up, of course) that UP is regarded as the premier university in the country.

  23. MM

  24. Chette

mataas tlga standard nang UP I am not surprised about that news hehe

  25. Euri

    Response to :

    Ouch! :p

don’t worry is rin ako dun. Ehehe!

  26. Marj

wenk! haha! Mas mataas pa La Salle sa Ateneo at UST?? hahaha! Oh well, sige na nga payag na ako dyan tutal UP pa rin ang highest sa Pinas. “international outlook”?? hahahaha! Tawa na nga lang ako. ^__^

  27. Nina

believe it or not, I honestly think that Philippine’s standards of education are higher than that of here in America. Ewan ko kung baket.. Siguro nga lang lately eh, napabayaan na… It’s just a surprise that DLSU is higher than UST.. sa pag kakarinig ko kais mas ok sa UST. Ewan ko ulet kung baket. Haha.

  28. bikoy

well, we can also ask the question, ano at sino ang gumawa ng mga batayan ng pag-rank ng mga universities? kailangan ba nating kilalanin at sundin yung mga batayang yon? :) hehe

  29. Theresa

I can’t believe though that DLSU is better than ADMU… A lot of us believed that Ateneo is better all the way… :P And same with UST too. We’re lower in rank, but what the heck, I’m still proud of my university!~

  30. tin-tin

it’s sad coz 299 na lang ang UP. i hope this would be a challenge to the iskos and iskas to do better :)

  31. ava

not bad. at least UP got into the top 500 universities despite the lack of funds. UP students are bright and internationally competitive, but yeah, since our government only allots a little on education, academic excellence is hard to maintain. of course lack of facilities and other cost cutting measures affects one’s learning.

being a student in the UPD Educ’s laboratory school, I can pretty much say that UP deserves to be the the top university in the Philippines. Gaaah, after all that rigorous training and huge bulk of requirements I have to comply to, I think I have the right to say that. (: I don’t know about the international outlook, but when it comes to teacher quality I’ll give it a perfect score.

Oh gee. We’re being handled by professors with PhDs.

    There. (:

  32. Emma

    Interesting :) Very interesting :)

You have your own reasons, I have my own reasons. And besides, i didnt tell na UP is the only school that is collecting brilliant minds. Did I tell something like that? No..no..no..

Peace po tayo.. I was just stating a fact .. a fact for me because I was with these people and I dealt with them directly, and I would say, mas gusto ko pa yun mga graduates ng PLM at PUP.

    Peace po tayo…

  34. Shari

    Marj: Same sentiments.

Nina: Filipinos are more diligent when it comes to studying, as I’ve been hearing.

    Bikoy: Exactly. :)

    Theresa: Yes, yes. Same here.

Ava: It’s just sad that UPIS hasn’t been getting positive reviews from most people I know. It has lost its quality, they say. And I’m totally surprised that most people I know who studied there didn’t pass the UPCAT.

Ate Ems: Alright. And maybe I’m being partly-biased because I like ADMU more than DLSU. :p

  35. Noreen

hey Shari! Thanks for dropping by! Wow, kasama DLSU. great :)

  36. Brandi (despair.nu)

Oh wow! I didn’t know that UP was so high up =] It does look like a nice school, though!

  37. Talamasca

Ummm… Hello? La Sallian here. I’m right here you know. I can hear you guys talking about MY school.

All this my-school-is-better-than-yours crap is just plain bullshit, so are the people who got this stupid mentality tagging along with their every strut. I’m sick of all these side comments. THE SCHOOL WHERE YOU CAME FROM DOESN’T DEFINE YOU, at least, most of the time.

    Seriously, THIS has to stop.

  38. Raymond

Ohh wow…congrats!Well my university was on the 277th place..Hmm…Thats bad eh..Last year its in the top 200!Damn..haha…

  39. Shari

Talamasca: Haha, cool lang! =p Marami kayong La Sallian dito, actually. I don’t even know a commenter who studies in ADMU. I think people are still in the UAAP state of mind. And like I’ve asked before, whose standards are the ones used in the ranking anyway, right? =)

Ate Ems: Hehe, true! And everyone knows I even hate my own school. Puh-leese. All we have are generalizations from our personal interactions and experiences everyday.

  40. ems

    hahaha! quiet na ako …

I agree. That’s why I said in my previous comments that all schools have their own set of “blacksheep” besides its not with the school, its with the person. Though I believe our school played an important role in our upbringing.

Friends po kami nyan so no worries ;) Diba Shari?

Even though UST’s at the tail of the top 500, I’m still proud of my school.

And really, if UP had only been provided of enough funds and government support, sigurado papasok pa kayo sa better position. Pero tingin ko next year tatas position niyo dahil 100 years na kayo!
